Wow...very thought provoking.
When I think frontman I think vocals only...Springsteen wouldn't get my vote based on that...
Another one to add would be Steven Tyler? He's rocked alot of venues but don't know if he's *greatest ever* though....

Hmmmmm

Off the top of my head I'd have to say Jagger.
Longevity has its rewards, and he did as much to shape rock music as any other "front man" I can recall.

My top 5..

David Lee Roth
Robert Plant
Freddy Mercury
Mick Jagger
Steven Tyler

They all own the stage when up there, in spite of the amazing talent they have surrounding them.
I've been lucky to see 3 of them, and wish I had seen Queen when I had the chance  Their performance at Live Aid is one of the best I've ever seen...I bought the DVD a few years ago, and it give me chills...no heavy theatrics, no gimmicks, just amazing talent and one of the greatest voices in Rock-n-Roll....here's part 1, you can link to parts 2 & 3 from there

This thread begs the question, "is rock dead?" . . . or "dormant?"

There are no bands touring this summer where the average age is under 40 (FORTY!!!!!) that anyone wants to see. At Great Woods the only band under 40 that will even remotely sell the place out is a Simple Plan this summer . . . and I would hardly call them "rock". There is Phish, Buffett, Peter Gabriel, Def Leppard, Kid Rock (who turned 40 this year), Motely Crue, 311 (who are all at, near, or above 40), The Mayhem Tour headlined by Megadeath and Machine Head who are all about 60, and Disturbed who are all at, near, or above 40 . . . is there any rock band out there with a front man worth noticing under 40? I honestly don't think there is.

The 80's and 90's all had young rock acts that became legendary. 70's and 60's obviously are well represented. So . . . I ask again . . . do we need to wait around for the Stones or Bruce Springsteen or Bon Jovi or, gasp, Dave Matthews to tour? When will rock return? It can't all be country and rap? Right?

I don't know about a front man but there's a band with a front woman worth noticing - Grace Potter & The Nocturnals.

I agree. You know I never miss her show out at the Chicken Box every year. She rocks! But, I meant, in terms of a band that would sell out a 10,000 or more tickets at an ampitheater or something. She SHOULD be that popular but she isn't. There is NOTHING to look forward to for summer touring rock concerts except bands that have been around for decades. And it has been that way for a loooooong time now. I doubt one front man named on this thread will be from 1990 or later except maybe Eddie Vedder or Kurt Cobain.

Far from it. There's far more to rock n' roll than the usual suspects hitting the shed circuit this summer.

Some of my favorite frontmen would be Michael Stipe, Eddie Vedder and Patterson Hood. Plant and Ronnie Van Zant would be up there too even though they didn't/don't really have the stage moves of Jagger, Roth or Mercury. It's their understated-ness that works for them.

Michael Stipe is in his 50's. Eddie Vedder is 47. Patterson Hood is also 47. Ronnie Van Zant is dead. There should be atleast one current rock n' roller under 40 years old generating a buzz . . . but I don't think there is. Again, I bet there won't be a single front man (or gal) named on this thread who made a name for himself after 1990 (other then maybe Vedder or Cobain) and certainly no one from the last decade (other then Grace Potter who I doubt a third of you know).

By the way . . . rock n roll's biggest selling single (according to the Guardian) in 2010? Journey's Don't Stop Believin:

And we all know them Brits know rock n' roll. 8)

I'm well aware of that, I wasn't addressing that aspect of your post. I was naming some of my favorite frontmen.

All genres of music have become increasingly fragmented since the late 90s, especially in the world of rock n' roll, that's why there's been no clear cut superstar in that genre since then though a case could most certainly be made for Kings of Leon (Anthony Caleb Followill), Radiohead (Thom Yorke), the Avett Brothers (Seth Avett), Mumford & Sons (Marcus Mumford) and others. At least that's what I've read about it and have witnessed for myself in the years since then. That's not to say some outstanding frontmen (and women) don't exist. As for Grace Potter, it doesn't matter if only one third of BN members have heard of her, she's made enough of an impact to at least be mentioned here so it's pretty clear she's made an impression on somebody. The days of mass exposure for a rock n' roll band are a thing of the past. That doesn't mean rock n' roll is "dead" or that there are no good frontmen (or women) out there because they most certainly are.

That, they do. And an old song "propelled back into the national consciousness in the winter of the previous year by a deft Glee/X Factor pincer movement" is hardly evidence that rock n' roll is "dead". Just turn on WXMU (if you have satellite radio) or tune in a progressive station such as KEXP out of Seattle for evidence.

Some great points (and Grace has made a tremendous influence on me . . .) so can you name a few current rock acts, under the age of 40 . . . 30 would be better . . . but I will give you to 40 . . . who is even remotely influence on a national or world scale? Like rock bands or performers such as Springsteen, Jovi, U2, Metallica, Dave Matthews, REM, Van Halen, etc. were when they were young and making an impact? Again, in 2011 (and for the decade prior) I just don't see it. I get your "fragmented" analysis and I agree with it entirely. But . . . there . . . has . . . just . . . got . . . to . . . be . . . something . . . . right?

Dave Grohl and The Foo Fighters (and his 4 other bands) is/are the closest I can come up with. And he is well into his 40's.

What about Radiohead, Nine Inch Nails or Coldplay...they've all had great success, made their names in the 90's, and have some great music.

Trent Reznor, who IS Nine Inch Nails, is almost 50. Radio Head's members are all around 43 - 45 years old. Coldplay s*cks ass but whatever . . . I will give you them . . . but hardly call them anything more then one or two hit wonder who hasn't done squat since they made their money. Chris Martin, their lead singer, is hardly anyone who would be considered for this thread . . . I don't think, anyways.

I was actually going to name Weezer . . . seriously . . . but they are all well past 40 too. D*mn!
