I've never wished a man dead, but this is an obituary that I read with great pleasure. BB, we totally agree the world is a better place without OBL, also we understand that everyone is someone's father, mother, brother, sister, or child. Those images of the radical terrorist celebrating after 9/11...left a sick feeling in the pit of our stomachs and angry! I would hope that we, as a country, are better human beings than those terrorist.Bicycle Bill wrote:I've never wished a man dead, but this is an obituary that I read with great pleasure. In fact, one of the only things that helped us get through that terrible time....was seeing the sane people of the world, grieving with us.
That being said......OBL is gone and thankfully "justice has been served" !!
You could probably even make an argument that is goes back further than that. But it doesn't really matter who started it and when, the thing now is to end it. And while killing Bin Laden is a good step, I think we have a lot more work to do since there are crazies from every group out there and the ability to get one's "message" out is so much easier with the Internet and all.Lightning Bolt wrote:If you take the opinion of the former U.S. Chief of Counter-Terrorism, Richard Clarke, the U.S. committed the first perceived "offense" to fundamentalist jihadis had with USA was when Ronald Reagan sent in the Marines to occupy Beirut back in '82. It's one thing, to them, to support their beliefs through financing and arms sales... but entirely another thing to set up encampments on Muslim lands. Those of non-muslim faith are deemed infidels when they occupy their holy lands.SchoolGirlHeart wrote:I beg to differ. Osama bin Laden and Al Qaida started this war....pojo wrote:GW started this war.
If you look back at the time line, the guerrilla raids (read: terror attacks) began as our military presence increased as we tried to stabilize the region...so much for the gratuities and appreciation, huh?![]()
This war has been running hot and cold for 30 years, and I wish we could figure out that the sooner we pull back our visible military presence in the entire region (relying more on drones, satellites, and spy networks), the more secure we could actually be!...but try selling that to lobbyists who represent the industrial military complex in this country.
To them, these wars are just plain good business.
They could care less about the honorable men and women who sacrifice so much in the name of patriotism and freedom.
2011 was already a remarkable year in the Middle East prior to May 1.
Hopefully, there will be even more positive developments, eh?
Based on what I'm hearing now eased into the sea means just that. I'm assuming they gently lowered the body into the sea to conclude the 40 minute ceremony.Seas in my veins wrote:I read an article where they "eased his body into the sea" in quotes. I suppose they did as best as they could to observe full Islamic protocol, short of maybe having an actual mullah or imam reciting the prayers. And they no doubt video-recorded the whole schmear so that they can release it later to show that once Osama was dead his remains were treated in a humane and respectful manner. Not that it's going to make a heckuvalot of difference to certain people within al Qaeda or the Taliban.Skibo wrote:Based on what I'm hearing now eased into the sea means just that. I think they did have someone say something in Arabic. You are right, no matter what we do, someone will say we didn't do something right or that he is still alive. They'll probably say our Western science is wrong and we don't know how to do DNA testing. I almost wish the lopped off his head and put it on a stake in the front yard of the Whitehouse.Bicycle Bill wrote:I suppose they did as best as they could to observe full Islamic protocol, short of maybe having an actual mullah or imam reciting the prayers. Local sharks report that his body was not especially tasty fare, more boney than hoped, and overgrown beard too greasy.BahamaBreeze wrote:The US govt is a bigger person than me to do this. But then again, I suppose it was done to not spark an outrage with his supporters.
Bin Laden's body was washed and placed in a white sheet. He was placed in a weighted bag. Religious remarks were made by a military officer and Osama Bin Laden was slipped into the Arabian sea about 2:00 A.M.

Maybe it was done so no foreign coroners could do an autopsy. I know Seal Team 6 is highly trained and very disciplined, but maybe they took a few liberties with him before he was shot. I know I would have had a tough time resisting sticking the butt of my rifle up his a$$ before I finished him off.Seas in my veins wrote:I read an article where they "eased his body into the sea" in quotes.
