The Whale's Tail - Destin, FL

Post by Bob Roberts »

So I remember reading several posts on here about the Whale's Tail. The wife and I are heading that way next week and are wondering if we should visit. Is it more of a bar or restaurant? When should we go?

Glad 'yall are coming to Destin soon. The coast is clear!

The Whale's Tail is Mr. Utley's favorite beach hangout.

Located on Miramar Beach's Scenic Gulf Drive near Seascape, the Whale's Tail is a down a dirty beach bar. In our area it's one of a kind because it is the only bar that you can walk right off the sand and order a drink. Upstairs, its an open air restaurant with good food. Downstairs is the beach bar where you'll normally find plenty of locals and visitors enjoying the views and breeze from the Gulf. Surrounded by public beach, you can set up your chairs and umbrella and bring your own cooler (no glass). There are restrooms downstairs for your convenience. We would recommend the Whale's Tail if you are looking for a "beach day" or a sunset cocktail. There is a beach service company that will rent chairs and umbrellas, jet skis, kayaks, catamarans and water toys for the kids.

Look for us most afternoons after 5:30 on the east side, near the showers where Mr. Utley has his happy hour peanuts. Enjoy!

The Back Porch does have a small beach bar, and the their food is fantastic. Yet not quite the atmosphere of the Tail. You won't find many, if any locals hanging down at the Porch. Also the beaches there were never re-nourished down there after the storms of 2005. Skinnier beaches.
