I think most of us agree we could do without it for a while at the shows. However it is the national anthem so it aint going anywhere.Have contestants send in videos of themselves singing the song and somebody on Jimmys staff can pick the winners. It would be sang by somebody different at each show on stage with Jimmy and the band.Sounds like fun

I rarely post on here but I sober up for a moment to type this, Margaritaville still is a hightlight for me every opportunity I get to catch Jimmy perform. It's a moment of pure parrothead zen with the thousands of other fans around me.

I agree. The key is not to be guilty of or hang out with pholks who play this tune to death.
I never did play it to death...nor have my parrothead phriends...in fact quite the opposite....thus it
almost seems like a rarity tune to me......and a much appreciated 1 at that!!!

The ONLY time I enjoy hearing Margaritaville is during a Jimmy concert...hearing it in a bar by some guy who wishes he was Bubba or accidentally bumping into a karaoke bar and hearing it murdered makes me wanna cry.

I can't say that I listen to it very much, but I do appreciate it being Jimmy's anthem. I am always glad when I hear it on the move, it is a song that makes people happy. I have had it played for me before at a club, or function by a well meaning person, with the idea that I would really like it, I just embrace the moment, breathe in, breathe out and move on, just saying.

I hate the song, but it is the BRAND.
So, you tell me - which is more important to Jimmy at the moment...the Brand or the band?
(That's a rhetorical question - I don't know the answer or think I could change things if I did.)
I think we're "stuck" with Margaritaville ("the anthem", as he calls it) - forever.

Nope. Not at all. When I hear it, I flash back to being a teenager,
in my dad's car back in Virginia Beach when it came on the radio (yes, on FM),
and my dad saying ... "Hey! Isn't this that singer you like?".
It was .... and my dad really liked the cleverness of the lyrics.
I did too. I can separate *the brand* from those memories.

I just wish the salt, salt, salt chant would be dumped in the trash heap.

The lyrics are very clever. I still think "But there's booze in the blender, and soon it will render" is genius!!
And to me its not a drinking or party song. Its really a love song.

Margaritaville is to Buffettdom as baseball and apple pie are to America. It's just part of the deal.

Believe me I know what you mean. I do like apple pie and baseball though. But we don't have to eat or watch. But when it comes to Margaritaville we're just stuck with it at certain venues, even those bars where we never think we'll hear it.

As a Trop Rocker...I have to take somewhat of a middle ground on this.
I know that a lot of folks feel the song is a bit overexposed. Heck, *I* get tired of listening to it. In my own shows, I go with what I think will work for the audience. So if I'm playing for a bunch of Trop Rock fans who are there to hear original stuff, I'll leave it out, and if I do Buffett, I'll do something unusual that they don't hear often, like "Smart Woman in a Short Skirt." The only Buffett song I've covered on an album was "Jolly Mon." Because I love the song.
That said, I also play for yacht clubs and farmers markets, and people in those places *expect* it. For those audiences, I just try to do a good job with it.
It's all a matter of where you are and what people expect, what will make them happy and what will disappoint them. And while it's a bit overexposed to many of us "lifers" who listen to this stuff all the time, to people who just take out the CDs a couple of times a year and maybe go to one concert...they want to hear it. And that's okay too.

Yep TropicalTroubador. In your case it's all about your audience. And let's face it, it's an easy sing-along for folks who are only exposed occasionally.

Jimmy actually did something like that one tour with WDWGD. They had a contest before the show and picked a winner to go on stage. Worked well...I think the winner actually won a Gibson guitar.
...but like the others, I feel that the concert goers enjoy Margaritaville the most of all the songs...followed by Brown Eyed Girl and It's Five O'Clock Somewhere and Fins and Volcano. It is just expected.
I'm always surprised that there is not much crowd reaction to One Particular Harbour.

My wife and I routinely go to a bar/restaurant (Morgan Creek Grill) on the Isle of Palms. Nice restaurant down. Open air up top with entertainment. Bil Krauss plays there 1st and 3rd Friday every month. This guy is good. Blends clean comedy in with the show and as the place is family oriented he gets the children involved. Plays some Buffett of course but won't play Margaritaville unless someone requests it. Doesn't play CIP either. Soasoas and CILCIA seem to be his favorites to just launch into. Plays an electric/acoustic graphite guitar. Never takes a break. Guess the fact that he's a marathon runner preps him for that. But he does like to play the best country and western song of all time, You Never Even Called Me By My Name, by David Allan Coe. I'm always amazed that no matter what kind of crowd is there everybody knows that song by heart. Great sing-along.
