Here you can discuss any other artist including Sunny Jim, Todd Snider, Jerry Jeff Walker, Steve Goodman, James Taylor, Alan Jackson, Bob Marley, Kenny Chesney and others
I've always loved how the dog gets introduced before the girlfriend.
This one is good too:
"It is as hard to describe the fascination of the sea as to explain the beauty of a woman, for, to each man, either it is self-evident, or no argument can help him see it."
For some reason, I get an error message when I click on any link on that page. For those that are experiencing the same thing, this site also has some info on the new tribute. Thanks for the tip-off on that.
Thanks for the extra link, Jonathan. Here is a photo on those links that is very special, although a bit sad-looking.
A poignant statement from Vince Gill about the recordings: This One’s for Him: A Tribute to Guy Clark returns the favor. Artists brought two key instruments: a guitar and profound reverence. Individual investments quickly emerged. Perhaps most notably, Gill claims a haunting bond. “Giant tears were falling all over my guitar as we were playing,” the country star remembers about serving as guitarist on Clark’s original “Randall Knife” recording nearly thirty years ago. “My dad was a lawyer, and he died when I was forty. Guy and I are tied at the hip through that song.”
It will be really special to hear Kevin Welch on Magdalene and also The Trishas doing She Ain't Goin Nowhere.
I was fortunate to catch their debut a few years ago at Steamboat Springs when they performed during a tribute to Kevin Welch...Kevin's daughter is one of The Trishas.

Good stuff, Bill.
Winch Wench, glad you mentioned the Heartworn Highways. I bought and enjoyed that years ago as a VHS and again as a DVD with some added features.
Another "little ditty" I pulled out is a book called Song Builder: The Life & Music of Guy Clark by Nick Evans & Jeff Horne (with a forward by Lyle Lovett)
I just now found info about it on Amazon, but if you can find it at a reasonable price somewhere, it is a great read, although only Guy's life until 1998 or so.
I love the story about Guy living in Rockport, Tx...where his father was in a law firm and later the county attorney. Guy learned to love the classical guitar from Lola Bonner, one of his father's partners. (Great name...Lola..donchuknow?)
Guy's album cover for South Coast of Texas taken by Jim McGuire in the 80s.
The book is both informative and enlightening. They make their case and approach the book with the express desire to examine Guy's work and his worldwide influence on songwriters and performers, including themselves, which is an integral part of the book. It was never meant to be a standard biography and given their limited resources of time and distance (although they made the journey to Nashville and shared time and music with the great man) it is a miracle that the book exists in the first place. As stated, it is the only book on Guy Clarke, to American writer's shame. It took two British musician's with a mutual love, respect and passion for Guy's work to give birth to this book and that is to their eternal credit.
Looking forward to Guy's new one in August and got it ordered...

It is totally worth getting the DVD just for the bonus material, in my opinion. Some of my favorite clips are actually in the "extras".

Here is a list of the tribute songs:
11. Randall Knife – Vince Gill
Vince played guitar on this one in 83
You're cutting his song 'The Randall Knife' for (the forthcoming album 'This One's for Him: A Tribute to Guy Clark,' due in November).
Yeah, that song is a real bond between Guy and I. I played guitar on the first version he ever did (on 1983's "Better Days"), and I'll never forget
it. We were playing, and giant tears were falling all over my guitar. (Like Clark's father), my dad
was a lawyer, and he died when I was 40. Guy gave me the original lyric to "The Randall Knife"
as a present.
How will you approach recording the song?
When Guy talks, that's what you think God's gonna sound like. I think I'm gonna wake up at
five in the morning and do it when my voice is as low as possible (laughs). You know, that
song inspired a song I wrote for my father when he passed away called "The Key to Life."
There's a reference: "The pain of losing him cuts like a Randall knife." Guy and I are somewhat
tied at the hip through that song.
FYI: That unique bass sound you hear on the release party CD? That's Bryn Davies. She's cute as a button and, man, can she make that thing sing. Verlon said she has perfect pitch and can play anything and everything.
Gentilly ... 42 years is a long time to wait .... a Northeast Texas woman can hope.
My love is an anchor tied to you, tied with a silver chain.
conched wrote:Molly, do you know the song My Favorite Picture of You. I understand Jerry Jeff has done that one at some of his shows.
Yes, he has.
He was ask to sing on the CD but all the 'good' songs were already taken.
So he called Guy and ask what to sing.
Guy had just finished the song and ask JJ to sing it.
The story is Guy had a picture of his wife that he loved---just a snapshot
and he wrote the song around the picture

here is a video I shot when when Marie and I saw Guy and Verlon in 09
Kevin, I enjoyed that video of Boats to Build and the article article about Vince Gill and Guy's song...Randall Knife.
Loved your quote from Vince... "When Guy talks, that's what you think God's gonna sound like."

That's wonderful but I still prefer vinyl records and CDs to mp3's. Even though I became iPod friendly in recent years, I've yet to purchase a single download (unless you count the download code card that comes with some vinyl albums these days).
