Marshall Chapman Interview on RM

Post by Bfan53again »

While driving yesterday I caught an interview with Kirsten, RM DJ, and Marshall Chapman. I knew that Marshall had ties with Jimmy, but did not realize how far back these two went. She claims she gave Jimmy the idea of the album title "Last Mango in Paris" while sharing time in Key West.

Nicely done and very informative interview......thanks RM! [smilie=coolup.gif] :pirate:

Marshall has a new book out called "They Came From Nashville". Stories and interviews with Kris Kristofferson, Mary Gauthier, Rodney Crowell, Emmylou Harris, Bobby Bare, Miranda Lambert, Bobby Bradddock, Terri Clark, Eddie Angel (Los Straitjackets), Don Henry, John Hiatt, Ashley Cleveland, Gary Nicholson, and Willie Nelson.

It is an excellent book.

I heard part of that interview. It was very interesting. She's a smart, tall woman in a real short skirt. :D

I had the good fortune to see Marshall open for Buffett back in '96 and she graced us with her presence again late last year when she did a book reading/live performance at Quail Ridge Books in Raleigh. All of her stories are great but the ones about Billy Joe Shaver and Willie Nelson had everyone rolling in the aisles. She's definitely someone that deserves a larger audience as an author and performer.

Maybe someday I can also have the pleasure of seeing her in person, too.......the stories she could tell! :pirate:

I saw her open for Buffett at Jones Beach once with her band The Love Slaves. She puts on a real good show.

She played a small venue here last night with Will Kimbrough and I passed on it. I'm now kicking myself.
I knew this girl made of memories and phrases, who lived her whole life in both chapters and stages.
Danced 'til the dawn, wished all her worries away.

She's a long way from a West Nashville grand ballroom gown.

You passed on the chance to see Marshall Chapman and Will Kimbrough? Go sit in the corner for 5 minutes.

I know! I've been a little anti-social the last few weeks. I take shows like that got granted here.

Marshall Chapman joined Rodney Crowell while he is on his BOOK Chinaberry Sidewalks Tour.

Good stuff. I Love Everybody written with Tim Krekel. (Saw Tim and Marshall open for Jimmy a few times.)

Love it when she says Awww...let's hear it for the band, Y'all!

I didn't hear it all but Terry Gross' interview with Rodney was recently repeated on Fresh Air. For those, like myself, that may have missed it, it's archived on the Fresh Air site here.

I had the pleasure of seeing Marshall Chapman 3 years ago at the Owl Bar at the Sundance Ski Resort. That was a great show. Prior to that, all I knew about her was her work on Last Mango, after that, well, you could say that I was a fan of all of her work. If you get a chance to see her, go, drive the hour or two necessary to catch her show live. You won't regreat it.

Marshall has penned an excellent article about the current state of music (not just country) in Nashville for Wmagazine.com which you can read below:

NASHVILLE RISING
AFTER DECADES OF HEE HAW KITSCH AND GARTH BROOKS MANIA, MUSIC CITY IS SINGING A SOPHISTICATED NEW TUNE. MARSHALL CHAPMAN LISTENS IN.

By Marshall Chapman
July 2011

There are more preconceived notions about Nashville than perhaps any other city in America, especially relating to music. The country music capital of the world? Home of the “Grand Ole Opry”? Nashvegas? The city is—or has been—all these things at one time or another. But there’s a new Nashville brewing that I almost hesitate to reveal. Otherwise, you’ll all want to live here, and we’ve got enough high-rises going up in the Gulch as it is.
