Thanks for posting, though I do find it a bit strange that the article barely even mentions John Prine, who was also very close to Steve Goodman throughout his career.

I don't think I even knew Prine had a hand in writing it until reading the liner notes for Goodman's No Big Surprise compilation.

This is a wonderful article and a great find. It is particularly helpful to us noobies who have just recent "got it". It provides some great historical info that I was totally unaware of. Thank you for posting.

If you haven't done so already, I highly recommend checking out the works of Steve Goodman, John Prine and Jerry Jeff Walker. There's many more I could add but those three are definitely essential, particularly when it comes to putting Buffett's early recordings (meaning the ABC/Dunhill years) into proper perspective.
I usually prefer to recommend entire albums but these compilations also aren't bad places to start:

That is the Steve Goodman recording I always recommend as well. Steve was a wonderful songwriter, but his sense of humor was really special, and the live disc of this compilation gives you some sense of that. Saw Goodman (and Prine) many times in the 70s, long before I knew aboput Jimmy Buffett and I still miss Goodman's wonderful music and performances!
One of the things I like best about Jimmy is that he always honors Steve's memory in some way when he plays Chicago, and many of those times have been memorable!

Steve Goodman "Facing The Music" is a wonderful read. It's a huge book but I couldn't put it down. Lot's of great stuff about JB and JP and other friends. It is honestly one of the best books I have ever read

I have to say "City of New Orleans" is my favorite Goodman song (sorry Ellen, I like BR as well but...) Everytime I hear it it brings tears to my eyes.

In my ongoing quest to catch up on 40 years of missed music, I found this great interview on YouTube.
And then I found this video with John Prine. But watch to the end. Steve does a solo also.

That solo acoustic performance (You're The Girl I Love)
by a young Steve Goodman
has always been one of my favorites.
I'll be seeing John Prine and Jimmy Buffett back-to-back next month.
It will be about my 30th time seeing John P. Maybe about my 90th time for Jimmy B.
Sadly I never had a chance to see Steve Goodman live.
Here it is for anyone who didn't wait through to the end of other video.

That is such a beautiful song SP....thank you for posting the video.
I had the good fortune of seeing Steve and John together in
Calgary one year......what a fantastic night that was.
I find myself listening to Goodman more that anyone else these
days. I have a bunch of his live shows and that is where he was
the best...that is what I would recommend to anyone looking for
an introduction to his music.

I agree--Goodman live was fantastic! His energy, personality and sense of humor were really something!

So I have taken Tiki Torches' advice and am starting with Steve Goodman. I just got the anthology and also ordered the book Facing the Music. I'll start on Jerry Jeff and John Prine after that.

So cool to learn that there are folks on BN who appreciate some of Mr Goodman's lesser know work and more willing to dig into this great artist!

Likewise. I can relate so much more to the works of Prine, Goodman, Steve Earle, Guy Clark, Todd Snider, etc. than I can to many of the other artists that are often mentioned here.
