So sad, such a tremendous voice, incredibly soulful. Her album Back to Black is so good and will last forever, even if she could only shine for a little while. Sail on, Amy

What is sad (to me) is that there are probably hundreds, if not thousands, of musicians and singers out there that are just as talented as she was who will never have her level of success because they aren't the f-up in their personal life that she was.
Take me for what I am, a star newly emerging.

I'm not a fan but I don't think she was successful because she was a "***** up" in her personal life.popcornjack wrote:What is sad (to me) is that there are probably hundreds, if not thousands, of musicians and singers out there that are just as talented as she was who will never have her level of success because they aren't the f-up in their personal life that she was.

I have to agree with Tiki Torches. I remember the first time I heard Amy Winehouse I stopped dead in my tracks. She had such an awesome voice especially for a 19 year old girl. She as also very pretty. The next time I recall seeing her was after the release of Back to Black and I was simply amazed at the transformation that had taken place.
Well...(said in my best Bubba voice) I've been on sabbatical.

"If I died tomorrow, I would be a happy girl." ~Amy Winehouse, Sept 1983–July 2011
How often we judge someone else's life/death path as "too short" or "tragic", when perhaps, on some level, it was perfect for them and for those whose lives they touched.

There is nothing "tragic" about someone who engages in self-destructive behavior that results in their death. Now innocent children gunned down on an island in Norway...that's "tragic".

I respectfully disagree.....indeed, apples and oranges.....but battles with addiction, having watched them with people very close to me, are indeed...tragic.

Re: Sail On Amy Winehouse
I saw this set of pictures once before. It's astonishing. People would sell their souls for her talent and pre-decline looks.ph4ever wrote:I have to agree with Tiki Torches. She went from vibrant and voluptuous to looking like a graffiti-covered crack ho' with a diseased wolverine living on her head. And all of her talent couldn't dig her out of her own premature grave. Which she dug herself with a needle and a crack spoon, one little bit at a time.
What an effin' waste.
I believe it is *always* possible to choose something better. Not always *easy*. But *possible*. And no matter what's happened in your life, it's almost never so bad that your only alternative is to kill yourself an inch at a time.
She didn't. And she did.

Re: Sail On Amy Winehouse
I may be misreading what Paige is typing, but the way I read that is that for some people, their time on earth is finite, and they see their path as destiny. For Amy, maybe that was the case and her addiction was her course, regardless of her attempts to change it. Terminal illness (which, IMHO, addiction is) is tragic for anyone close to the person, and often the person as well, regardless of his or her active attempt to change the course of fate.
I wasn't surprised by the news but saddened simply by the fact that in many cases addiction becomes a "part of the job" when talented musicians follow their hearts. I know several people avoid it, but often the path to stardom is lonely and difficult.
