U2 Ready To Throw In the Towel?

Post by Tiki Torches »

First R.E.M., then Sonic Youth, could U2 be far behind? Here's a couple of articles on the subject, the first from The Irish Times, the second from The Guardian.

'If we don't come up with a good reason to make a new album, we should just f**k off'

Is it time for U2 to call it a day?

They're still trying to revive her.

If U2 are going to continue (which it now sounds like they are) it may well be time for a complete overhaul a la Acthung Baby. Looking back on it now, it doesn't really seem like all that radical of a departure but if anyone is able to pull off a reinvention of themselves at this stage of their career it may well be U2.

War is still my favorite. A few years ago I ran across this box set at Amazon, one of the best investments I've ever made.

Bands like U2 are becoming extinct. Who now will be around in 30 years, selling out everywhere, etc... (50 years for the Stones!!!)

Enjoy them while you can!

Who knows but if means smaller shows at smaller venues at more reasonable prices I'm all for it. By the way, I went to see U2 on their 360° tour when they came to Raleigh a couple of years ago but mainly because I'd been wanting to see them since the War tour back in the early 80s. I also paid less than $50 for my ticket thanks to their ticket pricing structure. I was in the stands for the concert but it was such a spectacle (in a good way) that you could be seated almost anywhere in the venue and still enjoy it. Roger Waters is bringing his tour for The Wall here in July, the least expensive ticket is over $70.

Doubt it. Bono has said that before.

saw them on this tour at the Raven's stadium. Tix was around $50 and I was Front row (right in front of the Edge). Incredible show. And I have been a Fan since War as well. Achtung Baby was and it still is my favorite album. But War, Joshua Tree, and All That You Can't Leave Behind are very very close behind...

In the second post of the thread I posted a link to an article from Spinner.com about the three albums they're currently working on and prefaced that link by saying it didn't look like they're going to throw in the towel. When and if they do decide to hang it up, believe you me, everyone will know about it.

I was just responding to your original question that linked an article referring to the possibility they may break up. The second article disbuted it. Neither are the gospel according to Bono and neither are definitive answers. I learned a long time ago to not believe everything I read on the internet. :D But you are correct in saying if they do, the world will know. And quite possibly tilt on it axis. And the stars fall from the sky and the moon turn red.....

I would imagine that unlike R.E.M. or 10,000 Maniacs, they would also embark on a worldwide farewell tour. I'm glad I got to see them a couple of years ago but I'm still kicking myself for missing them when they played Kenan Stadium in Chapel Hill in '83 during the War tour. Also on the bill: Todd Rundgren, Grandmaster Flash and the Producers. This site does an excellent job of documenting that concert.
