I need info on tablets/Kindle/Nook
We got a Nook and Kindle for Christmas.
The big question is:
Do you get anti-virus software for these?
If not, how do you keep from getting hit with every virus out there.

I am completely new to this Kindle stuff. I wouldn't even have one now had I not won it. I haven't had much time to play with it yet, I didn't realize you could get a virus on it.

I look at it this way. Most work off of wireless. So you wouldn't have anything on them except email, if you use it for that. I don't think their operating systems are something that the people who want to go after for viruses are high on their list. Most viruses attack Window system because it is easy. Macs make it a lot harder. I would think local libraries or amazon and Barnes and Noble have high security requirements.

They aren't going to be used as readers, but as tablets mostly for traveltigzoe wrote:I look at it this way. Most work off of wireless. Re: I need info on tablets/Kindle/Nook
I am not sure about the other tablets. But it is my understanding is that the nook is an android based system, which is basically a cell phone. I guess it would be based upon the other operating systems on the tablets. I would be concerned about any windows based products. I think things are too new to have issues.springparrot wrote:They aren't going to be used as readers, but as tablets mostly for traveltigzoe wrote:I look at it this way. Most work off of wireless. Re: I need info on tablets/Kindle/Nook
I am working off the assumption you got the tablet form of these products and you have access to an app store for them. If so, check out the app store for an app called Lookout. It is kind of the mobile device version of antivirus software. You will get a trial of the premium software for a month or something and then after that, just the basic protection for free.
I use Lookout on my Android phone. It checks each app I download for anything malicious. I think it offers some protection for general web surfing, but I am not totally sure.
If anything your app store should be able to help you identify apps that could help you.

We are sooo far behind times....we even don't have apps on our phones. Or not sure we can even have them.

It isn't any harder to make viruses for Macs or Linux then it is for Windows and according to Symantec, the makers of Norton, it may be easier. The real reason that you don't see a lot of viruses for Macs or Linux system has to do with the numbers game. There aren't nearly as many Macs and Linux machines so there is less of a point to it then there is with Windows based machines.tigzoe wrote:I look at it this way. Most work off of wireless.
