R.A. Dickey just won his 20th game of the year, the first Mets pitcher to win 20 since Frank Viola in 1990.

First knuckleballer to win a Cy Young award? He's got some competition in Cueto and Gonzalez.LIPH wrote:R.A. Dickey just won his 20th game of the year, the first Mets pitcher to win 20 since Frank Viola in 1990.
Tigers win today in bottom of ninth, helped by Prince Fielder's infield double.

Re: 2012 Major League Baseball
He is tied with wins with Gonzalez & leads in every other category, even in shuts outs. For him not to win would be a disgrace -but it is the same professional organization who won't let Pete Rose in the HOF so who knowschippewa wrote:First knuckleballer to win a Cy Young award? Re: 2012 Major League Baseball
Dickey leads the league in innings pitched, strikeouts, complete games and shutouts. He's either first or second in ERA and he has 20-6 record for a team with a losing record. Gonzalez and Cuteo pitch for the 2 best teams in the National League. In my mind it's no contest, Dickey should be a lock for the Cy Young.

Re: 2012 Major League Baseball
The only pitcher that should challenge Dickey is not Gio Gonzalez or Johnny Cueto. It is Craig Kimbrel. I normally wouldn't compare a closer to a starter but this year I think it deserves discussion in terms of Cy Young voting. With an ERA of 1.04 and a WHIP of 0.66 (40 combined hits and walks in 60 innings) with 40 saves in 43 chances you really could make the case that Kimbrel is the most valuable pitcher in the NL . . . no way Atlanta makes the playoffs without him or any other closer (even Chapman would be a borderline push). I would have to flip a coin between the two. Dickey is a feel good story, though. I bet he gets it.LIPH wrote:Dickey leads the league in innings pitched, strikeouts, complete games and shutouts. 1. Dickey
2. Kimbrel
3. Gonzalez.
As it stands today.

CONGRATS TO THE NATS ....
they lost tonight but clinched the division when the Braves lost.
Still going for the best record in baseball over the course of the season
and home field advantage
(such as it is this crazy playoff season)
through the postseason.
Fun watching this team and this city/region celebrate tonight.
(And the Cowboys are getting beat .... life is good tonight in DC land)

A's beat Rangers, clinch playoff berth
The 2012 A's are going to the postseason.
Yes, the club that traded three of its top pitchers, all All-Stars, last winter. The team that lost its starting third baseman on the first full day of spring training and three starting pitchers in the past month and a half.
Oakland's third baseman is a catcher, the first baseman is an outfielder, the former shortstop is at second base and the top left-hander in the bullpen was a first baseman until last fall, for crying out loud. There are five rookies in the A's rotation. Five of them.
Yes, this group of castoffs and youngsters beat the two-time defending AL champion Rangers 4-3 Monday night at the Coliseum to claim, at the least, the second wild-card spot. The team celebrated with a sight familiar in its home park: wildly jumping around in a tight bunch.

Re: 2012 Major League Baseball
I'm not much of a Tigers fan, but I really hope Miguel Cabrerra pulls off the triple crown.
I did not know this, but one of the E.S.P.N. announcers just said baseball's last three triple crown winners (Carl Yastrzemski-1967, Frank Robinson-1966, and Mickey Mantle-1956) all went to the world series that year with their respective teams. (And I actually remember watching the 1966 & ' 67 world series).
Good luck, Mr. C.

These high-priced Dodgers finished where the bankrupt Dodgers of last season finished — out of the playoffs.
The Guggenheim-backed Dodgers were officially eliminated from postseason contention Tuesday night, as they fell to the San Francisco Giants, 4-3, at Dodger Stadium. Their pursuit of the second of two National League wild-card spots was over.

Re: 2012 Major League Baseball
The team with the lowest salary in all of baseball is playing for the AL West Championship today
The teams are both 93-68 going into Wednesday's all-deciding season finale. If the A's win, they will play in one of the AL Division Series this weekend, and if they lose, they will play in the wild-card game Friday.
Only four teams in big-league history have come back from a deficit of 13 games to win a pennant or division title: the 1914 Boston Braves, the 1978 New York Yankees, the 1951 New York Giants and the 1995 Seattle Mariners. The A's were 13 out on June 30.

The Rangers gagged away the AL West title. Who do they think they are, the 2011 Red Sox?

Buster Posey wins National League batting title
Posey is the first National League catcher to win the title since Ernie Lombardi of the Boston Braves in 1942 and the fourth in the 137-season history of the league. Posey had 178 hits in 530 at-bats.
