New Set List Unveiled in Tampa

A new set list was unveiled last night in Tampa at 1-800-ask-gary. The show opened with "One Particular Harbour," a very strange choice, in my opinion, for an opening song. So if you're in line buying a margarita, you've just missed "One Particular Harbour." I also like the idea of beginning a show with a song that isn't usually played. What was good about the choice was it was unexpected, really caught me off guard, and it gets everybody up singing and stomping. I'm wondering now if "OPH" will be the opening song for the new tour.
They played four songs from Coconut Telegraph: "Coconut Telegraph," "Growing Older But Not Up," "It's My Job," and "The Weather Is Here, Wish You Were Beautiful." I've been missing songs from this album on recent tours. For me, then, this is a welcome addition. I expect to see in the near future a live version of Coconut Telegraph uploaded to iTunes.
I predict that "Knee Deep" will become a permanent fixture of the set list, as "It's Five O'Clock Somewhere" has done, since it's a hit in which JB played a part.
"Swingin' Hula Girl," featuring JB on ukulele, was played and it really knocked me out.
They resurrected "No Plane on Sunday" from Floridays, and JB changed the lyrics to reflect recent events in the airline industry. I enjoyed listening to the song on RM, though I'm not sure it's a great concert song. What I like about it is JB taking chances and breaking out some unusual songs.
Ilo Ferreira did not open for the band, which makes me assume that he will not be opening on the new tour.
They played 25 songs, which is down from the 27-28 that they usually play, a function, perhaps, of a lead singer who (How do I say this? Oh, yeah,) has taken many a trip around the sun.
Out of the 25 songs they played, at least 5 were covers: "Swingin' Hula Girl," "Hey Good Lookin'," "Southern Cross," "Uncle John's Band," and "Brown Eyed Girl." That means that 20% of the show was covers. If you consider "It's Five O'Clock Somewhere" and "Knee Deep" covers, the percentage goes up from there.
Great show! Great set list! "Coconut Telegraph," "No Plane on Sunday," "It's My Job," closing with "Nautical Wheelers," for me it doesn't get any better than that. It was clear to me that JB had a blast performing in Tampa. He loves performing. He is probably addicted to it. And, in my opinion, there's absolutely no chance that he's going to stop performing any time soon. Get out there and enjoy the new tour. The set list is great.
