Re: When will Jimmy retire touring?
I'm hoping that he will always be touring in some form or fashion, or at least be entertaining somewhere. I just hope that he feels good enough and is happy to do that for a long time yet.
I always kinda aimed to be able to go to as many shows at least as my age
It may not happen since I only have 50 shows and I'm 63, but it's still my goal for now.

Mmm-hmm. What AF said.AlbatrossFlyer wrote:From a purely business perspective....
Jimmy will retire after Margaritaville Inc. goes public.
Until then, he is the face of the brand identity and the value of the Margaritaville brand will significantly diminish if he isn't out there selling er, touring, releasing albums etc. The basic problem is the brand doesn't transcend the rabid consumerism of the parrothead flock. And without Jimmy touring the flock flies away. Once Jimmy maximizes the value of Margaritaville Inc. and then cashes out by going public its only a matter of time before retirement.

Although I think he'll keep performing in some capacity until he can't any more. Maybe small venues close to home, M'Ville's, etc. The big tour, who knows? But I believe that even after the big tours are done, he'll still play before audiences somewhere. Maybe not even announced any more. He just shows up at a Margaritaville and anyone lucky enough to be there is lucky that day...

Re: When will Jimmy retire touring?
Talk of Jimmy *retiring*
always centers on concerts and touring.
I choose to look at it from another perspective ...
I look forward to Jimmy having more time
to write ..... another book (or ten) ....
his definitive autobiography .....
.... another musical?
Imagine if the man took up another
creative *hobby* .... ?
Photography or perhaps painting.
I'd pluck down a pretty penny
for a signed Jimmy Buffett lithograph .....
(or an original!)

Guys like Jimmy don't retire. Its in his blood. As time takes its toll there may be fewer shows but I suspect there will always be some kind of opportunity to see him live until he cannot do it anymore.

Re: When will Jimmy retire touring?
I just read an article in the new issue of Rolling Stone about how B.B. King, who's 86 years old, played 117 shows last year which is more than road dogs such as Dylan, My Morning Jacket and Wilco. Then again, it really doesn't really matter what you say or what examples you provide, someone is always going to bring up the possibility of Buffett retiring every year at tour time. Seems to happen like clockwork around here.

It's really too bad people don't just search for the same topic....as there are way too many of these threads.....kinda surprised this one hasn't been locked yet.Tiki Torches wrote:I just read an article in the new issue of Rolling Stone about how B.B. Re: When will Jimmy retire touring?
Great point, although I think Margaritaville, Inc. has a chance to be one of the exceptions. So many diverse products that really aren't based on his music but on his lifestyle. Clothing, blenders, salsa, etc.AlbatrossFlyer wrote:From a purely business perspective....

Elvis made over $50 million last year, I don't think he's toured in decades.
I think Buffett's fans are probably as loyal, or at least close.

Re: When will Jimmy retire touring?
To the best of my knowledge there's only two threads on the topic, this one and this one. This thread was started first, so I posted here. At any rate, it seems pointless to speculate but that's obviously not going to stop people from doing so. Bluesman Hubert Sumlin, who passed away late last year at the age of 80, kept playing right up until the very end. I suspect folks like him, Buffett, B.B. King, Dylan and others that still get a kick out of performing will continue to do so for as long as they possibly can.~Hippolyte~ wrote:It's really too bad people don't just search for the same topic....as there are way too many of these threads.....kinda surprised this one hasn't been locked yet.Tiki Torches wrote:I just read an article in the new issue of Rolling Stone about how B.B. Jimmy has absolutely no plans or intentions of retiring and it is not financially motivated.
He will stop when it stops being fun. And it is very fun.

I absolutely agree, Jimmy is just shifting gears here and doing a smooth job of it as well. This recent midwest leg with Omaha, DSM, Dallas and KC had a great response , I know DSM sure did and he put on a memorable show.
It is so good to see JB finally playing his early music, he played "The Captain and the kid " in KC last night and hadn't played it in concert since 1990 ! I would love him to play some old songs by others like Steve Goodman......... a little Banana Republics would be very rare also.
