says he loves Pine Knob but wanted to go downtown.

edit: after reading the story, the promoters wanted the opening act, Jimmy said he knows his detroit audience and they didnt need one but he agreed.

They interesting thing was that they talked about different artists, they wanted one that was already booked........ i.e. I believe that artist was Kenny Chesney. They went with L.R.
Nothing against Lionel.......but I don't think they'll be 10 fans there Saturday who could less whether LR is there or not.
Well, I admit I was wrong on this one. No question that Detroit embraced Richie's set immensely. In fact, I'm gonna go out on a limb here & say that based upon Buffett's scant 25 song setlist (What the.... :o ) & the fact there were no real treasures in the back end of the Buffett set, that Lionel Richie's set was THE highlight of the evening. The crowd was definitely onboard with the the sing-a-long ballads, "Hello", "Still", "Easy".....they seemed to enjoy the danceable tunes "Dancing on the Ceiling" & "Running With The Night", a little reggae infused version of "Sail On", but the highlight HAD TO BE the old Commodores staple in which everyone boogied to back in '77, "Brickhouse". THAT 1 my phriends brought the house down!
As someone mentioned over on the setlist page it's too bad R.M. didn't broadcast Lionel's set.

Final Analysis...........nice to sit/stand/dance around the ballpark with 40,000 phriends....but Olympia Entertainment brought NOTHING to the table IMO other than inflated prices & a concrete jungle in which we were forced to tailgate in. Sure, it was nice to have the option of dropping into Hockeytown Cafe, Bookies Bar & Grille or 1 of the other half dozen bars in the area (we hit a REAL dive called The Comet) & it was beneficial for the extra 20,000 people who would have been shut out if this show would have been at the local outdoor amphitheatre, but c'mon now....the escapism that 1 looks for from a Buffett show was tempered by the realities of some of the ugly surroundings.

Please Jimmy, take your show BACK where it belongs to PINE KNOB next year......no matter how much $$ O.E. throws at you!
F.W.I.W......good to hear Jimmy say "he'll see us next year, there's no doubt about that"!

I'm going to agree with you here. Lionel's set was the hit of the show. His sound was better and he really got the crowd going. Unfortunately (at least from where we were sitting) Jimmy was so distorted you couldn't understand a word he was saying...kinda like when the national anthem echos around and around a stadium. We listened to the concert replay on the way home and it was good to hear the music and comments in hearable form.

I'm so very anxious to go back to Pine Knob. The whole experience there is so special. And we wouldn't have had the nightmare of trying to find our way out of Detroit with all the road/ramp closures.

Missed meeting up with all the BNers and our little chunk of paradise under the trees...

We were in 326, so we were far enough back that we literally couldn't tell for sure whether Roddie Romero had a band with him because they were in all black, but the sound was really good there.

And I'll actually disagree on LR- he was fine, I guess, but I know I seemed less enthusiastic for the Buffett portion because I was bored for most of his set, then spent an hour sitting on my butt being bored before the show started, and that hour gave me time to come down from the excitement of the tailgate, sober up, start feeling the sunburn (I have the magic ability to miss a patch of skin every.single.time I put on sunblock- this time it was my nose and a strip of chest) and basically run out of steam (it's been a very long two weeks at our house). The setlist is better this year than last, but I just had too much time for the "tired" to seep in.

I was on the field, sect CC row 26. For us the sound was great. And actually overall I lwas very happy w/ the Comerica experience. This was my 16th show and I've done, Palace, Knob, Riverbend, Tinley, and Alpine. So I've tailgated elsewhere.

I loved we could start the tailgating much earlier. I did NOT like that the jackasses in the lot refused to let me BUY my friend's spot and hold it' w/ our 10x10 tent till they could get there. We were right off they road, the excuses they gave were not valid. Whatever...finally someone let us do it, after 45 minutes of waiting and asking everyone under the sun. And guess what? The world didn't end for them! I also didn't like the bums. Some were down right rude and threatening!

I put my long rant on the other thread viewtopic.php?f=1&t=89455&p=3945524#p3945524 but in a nutshell I found Lionel to be HORRIBLE. I come into a Buffett concert ready for "Hot, Hot, Hot" maybe a small RELATED opener like Ilo. What I don't want is an hour of ballads to kill my buzz and make me want to sleep. Like coconuts said, I too was sleepy after having to listen to it. I sure as hell did still pop up when Hot Hot Hot finally started, but nearly 10pm was a bit late!

I'm all for another OE event, as long as the parking lot assholes use some common sense. Seeing "security" or someone around to deal with the bums would have been nice too. But OE, like Jimmy said, he doesn't NEED an opener!!!! His opener is the lot. Don't ruin the experience with unrelated (other then All Night Long) artists that sing ballads and bring down the parrothead vibe. Also I think the reason many liked LR, is that Comerica gave MANY virgins the chance to finally catch a Buffett concert (which is great), but IMHO not worth an opener.

Was fun to walk to our seats and see Mac, Utley, etc watching some of Lionel though.....I'm sure they were like who's the drunk girl screaming our names. LOL.

Of course, in the end, I just want Jimmy back again next year. I've tailgated Palace (very lame), Knob and now Comerica. I'll take any as long as the man is on stage (without a boring ass opener PLEASE).

We had a bit of a problem with the parking lots too- it very specifically said on the OE map that you couldn't reserve any of the lots, but Lots 1 and 2 were reserved, not full, when we got there.

As for the spaces, the people next to us just parked their E-Z Up there and wandered off, and one security person said something about it, but that was it.

Overall, they were cooler than PK generally is though.

Other than the transition wherein you USED to be able to park randomly......& now the PK people direct you to do the side by side parking......what kind of flack do you get from them? Now on non-buffett days they ARE a pain in the ass....but on Buffett-Day.... [smilie=noeyedear-shrugging.gif]

i agree with corona, get jimmy back to the knob! i sat in sec 143 row 30 the closest section to the left of the stage and jimmy looked like he was only 4 inches tall :o it was kinda cool to have so many phlockers at one show, but there was no intimacy,it did feel like we were in a concrete jungle,as we partied in the lot,but it was nice that they put a porta pottie out there! i did'nt care for the commercial carnival lot, though,i did'nt mind when jimmy brought his own brands to the knob, after all, it part of his stick, all in all i liked the performaces by both L-R and J-B, i'm all good now,for the summer, becuase i got my live jimmy fix,now comes the wait, would it be nice to have 2 shows at the knob next year? LOL! asking too much!

until next time
bye

Neither are bad at all- but PK actually means business and makes you leave aisles to drive in. Security there just wanted your stuff out of a space they could get money for, other than that they did not care at all.

Im sure alot of you were across the street in the "x" gravel lot.

That filled up before 1pm and was 5 dollars more than the private lot across the street which didnt even have alot of people till 3.

I know the "rude bum" , he wouldnt leave us alone and wanted a beer, finally to get him away I gave him two jello shots and he started bi$ching about it and calling us names cause he wanted a beer, the private lot attendants started chasing and threatening him. hahaha he took off fast for your lot. lol
