Vintage CNN Interview (1981)

This
interview originally aired on CNN back in 1981. It was conducted in Greenville, NC when Buffett was in town playing at Minges Coliseum on the campus of East Carolina University when he was touring in support of
Coconut Telegraph. Below is my ticket stub from the concert which was my second ever Buffett show. The first time I saw him, he was playing on a bill with Nantucket and The Spinners at Kenan Stadium in Chapel Hill during Apple Chill Weekend back in the late 70's.

I found it on it on this
site. I haven't lived down at the coast in a while but when I was there "Do What" aired on the local cable access channel. Usually it was just beach/ocean scenes set to new age music. Apparently, they've branched out. What led me to the CNN piece on Buffett was this
clip of Leon Russell they posted from his performance in Morehead City this past Wednesday night.

Thanks for posting this. I especially enjoyed the clip of "Trying' to Reason with Hurricane Season" and Buffett's remarks about the only wall is the wall the performer puts up.
Fins Up!

I really enjoy a lot of the videos. I especially enjoyed the Beach Music and Shag dancing videos.
Yes, the Leon Russell comments were interesting.
Great find.

That was awesome! Notice that he still says the same things about enjoying the tours and he will keep doing them as long as they are fun. And it's 31 years later!
I do have to admit I like the slower tempo of the songs back then. Seems like they are so up tempo for concerts nowadays - maybe just to keep the crowd up. But I wish to have been at those earlier concerts.

Great interview....great piece...nice to hear the songs without Jimmy overdoing every hook....He also seems very "relaxed" in the interview.

Definitely preferred the shows in those days compared to what they've become.

Great interview. Nice to see an artist who's voice sounds about the same live back then as now.
"Trying To Reason" for example is much like the one on Tuedays, Thursday, Saturdays.
And I like that Jimmy has always improvised parts of the lyrics from day one in concert.
A lot of performers are fuddy duddys and don't stray much from the record version.
