The Beach Boys 50th Anniversary Tour

Post by jbfinscj »

I had the chance to go and see the Beach Boys on May 11th in Pitsburgh. The show was absolutely incredible, arguably one of the best concerts I have ever seen. I have seen different variations of the Beach Boys over the years and Friday nights show might have been the best. I just wish Carl and Dennis Wilson were still alive to have been able to take part in these historic show. If you have the chance go and see them, this is probably the last opportunity to see the remaining members together on tour. Below is the set list from the show.

Everybody needs to see this tour. I have probably seen over 100 concerts over the years, and this one is easily in the top 5. Mike Love's voice has aged, but Al Jardine still sounds the same as he did in the 1960's.

Caught a bit of their set from outside the perimeter when they played the downtown Raleigh Amphitheatre a few weekends ago. What few songs I heard sounded good but I couldn't justify the 50+ bucks to get in. It may be the last time this version of the line-up ever tours but that's far too many medleys for me.

Tiki torch,

Not sure what you heard but I can assure you that they didn't do one medley in the 45 song set list for the Pittsburgh show. Each song was the full version, keep in mind though that the majority of their songs clock in under 3 minutes. $50 was a heck of a bargain to see this tour, hell I paid $250 a piece in Pittsburgh for 6th row center and that was face value!

I found this setlist from the Raleigh show which makes no mention of medleys but there was definitely some in there. You can watch one via the clip below but there are several more on YouTube, all from the Raleigh concert. I'm perfectly ok with only hearing a few songs from the sidewalk. Aside from the medleys, some of Mike Love's stage moves are downright cringe worthy. They did sound pretty good though. Not hard to do when you have a large back up band to cover for you.

1st Set
Do It Again
Catch a Wave
Don't Back Down

No, it isn't live, but the Beach Boys are going to be on QVC this evening. Check your time zone to find what time.

I'm sorry tiki torch, but you are wrong. I just watched the video and checked on my ITunes' library to see how long each song originally was when they were recorded. They break down like this:

Little Deuce Coup - studio version: 1 minute and 41 seconds / live youtube clip: 1 minute and 36 seconds
409 - studio version 2 minutes and 1 seconds / live youtube clip ended at the 3 minute and 28 second mark
Shut Down - studio version: 1 minute and 50 seconds / live youtube clip ended at the 5 minute and 2 second mark
I get around - studio version 2 minutes and 15 seconds / live youtube clip ended at the 7 minute and fifteen second mark

If you do the math each songs clocks in a little over or a few seconds under the original version. Like I said earlier you have to remember most of their songs were originally written to be under 3 minutes, it was just the way it was done back in the 1960's. You are right though, their back up band do an amazing job. The only Beach Boy who still sounded the same was Al Jardine, Love, Johnston, and Wilson definitly showed some age.

Thanks for the clarification. I got the medley thing from how some of the clips are labeled on YouTube, plus this review I read several weeks ago from Rolling Stone which said, "Over the course of nearly two and a half hours, they played an astonishing 42 songs, many of them medley-style, with nearly no banter in between", with the keywords being "medley-style". I'm not sure of the exact state of Brian Wilson's health but he's appeared to be rather catatonic for quite some time now. That's not a slam against him as I admire the man greatly. I'm guessing that stems from the years he spent under the "care" of Eugene Landy. It's a wonder he's still alive, much less still performing and recording. That's the main reason I swung by the amphitheatre a few weekends ago, because it's pretty doubtful that this lineup of the Beach Boys will ever tour again. At least Brian Wilson was honest about it by saying he was only doing it for the money. As much as I like the Beach Boys, it still wasn't worth it to me to fork over the $50 to go inside. At least I got to hear 5-6 songs by this lineup of the band and I'm perfectly ok with that.
