He did 27 songs in both the Austin and Houston shows, which has been pretty standard for the last few years, so I don't see how the shows are shorter.
I don't care about not having a second encore but what does bother me is this:
1. It's Five O'Clock Somewhere
2. Knee Deep
3. Swingin’ Hula Girl
4. Sea of Heartbreak
5. Piece of Work (Acoustic w/ Peter, Jim, Mac, Eric, Nadirah and Tina)
6. Southern Cross (Acoustic w/ Peter, Jim, Mac, Eric, Nadirah and Tina)
7. All Night Long
8. Gulf Coast Highway
9. Scarlet Begonias
10. Brown Eyed Girl
Of the 27 songs in the last 2 shows, 10 of them are covers. Four of them - Knee Deep, Swingin' Hula Girl, Sea Of Heartbreak and All Night Long - have been added in the last 2 years. If he's going to keep adding new cover songs, drop some of the other s*** that he's been doing for 20+ years. He's becoming a lounge act.
Gulf Coast Highway and Sea of Heartbreak are likely to drop off the set list as they have been performed especially for the two Texas shows.
It's Five O'Clock, Knee Deep, All Night Long, and Southern Cross will likely remain in the set list, the others will likely be played in rotation with other concert favorites that Jimmy likes to add to his set lists

That does help explain the name of the tour.
"That which is around me does not affect my mood; my mood affects that which is around me."
2) It's not clear that he should be ending if he doesn't go off and come back and do a single song. Doing a final set of 3 songs is confusing, particularly after doing a "first encore" (?) of 2 songs.
Also, I have noted that the last couple of shows have been pretty short. I also noticed that the shows started to get shorter during the "Summer Break" tour last year.
I've ALWAYS thought it as kinda weird the tradition of going offstage, then reappearing for a final tune or 2. Now I can understand it if somebody had to take a p*** break....or the band wanted to go backstage & take a straw poll to figure out what song/songs to finish with....but to just wander off for sport......
Corona by day, Corona by night, any old time is just alright!
When Guy Clark ends his show he just kinda grins and tells the crowd to pretend he went off stage and pauses and proceeds to introduce the next song.
Jimmy could do encores all night long. I'd probably still leave, as usual, wanting more.
It was strange leaving last night again without that nice ballad as a closer. Even if Jimmy depends on the band and background vocals...I always enjoy a more reflective song to wind down. I'm sure the majority left hyped up, While many left before the concert even ended.
Best ever closer was Oysters & Pearls at Jones Beach.
Maybe Jimmy feels after singing for a couple hours that his voice isn't at its best to close the show with a solo acoustic song...so he chose to go a completely different route.
Just glad he is opening and closing shows these days.
When I saw Van Morrison, forget about encores. He took the microphone off the mic stand and walked off the stage while he was still singing. Never acknowledged the crowd, just left his band out there to finish without him.

No, BRB, song, huh? I know he probably never closed with Brown Eyed Girl.

Saw Willie Nelson last summer at a county fair outdoor venue. He said good night, the band played him off and played for a couple of more minutes. Willie's tourbus had pulled out by the time they finished, and by the time we got to the aisle to leave his bus was already off the property. We walked out to the the aroma of some top-shelf herb.

Fins at the end is kind of entertaining. The casual fans at both the Austin and Houston shows were freaking that he hadn't played fFns yet by the end of the show. It was fun to watch them.
A 5 song encore is great. Just because he doesn't walk off the stage again and back on doesn't mean he isn't doing a lot of encores or you are getting the best bang for your buck. Jimmy can do what he wants.
The acoustic set in the middle is AMAZING! You can tell they are all having a great time. If Jimmy keeps doing Jolly Mon then another special acoustic second encore song, I don't know why anyone would be upset.

It's worth noting that an "encore" is a ridiculous gimmick anyway. It's become a tradition that most bands do it and everyone expects it, but it really isn't a true encore unless he wasn't planning on coming back out and the crowd really changed his mind. Otherwise, it's just a built-in break bands use to generate some additional enthusiasm leading up to the end.
As long as I get the same quantity of songs, I'm cool with no encore at all. If I'm gonna get the same quantity whether there's a encore or not, get me out of there sooner. It's getting late. I have a parking lot to get stuck in.
I'm also fine with him ending on an upbeat song, but choosing a song that's been a setlist staple for god knows how long isn't too exciting to me when it's an artist with enough of a catalog to make it interesting and pretty universally appealing.
★ Maybe it's because in spite of all the work we do, it's the child in us we really value.

Which is exactly what I mentioned just a few posts back NPR ran a great piece on encores back in April. For anyone that may have missed it, you can listen to it here. There's also a transcription on the site.

Italian oregano ? Spanish paprika ?
And I gotta say, one of the most memorable, great moments at a concert was when Jimmy broke into "God's Own Drunk". Hilarious.
p.s.....second encores are a little much. (silly?)
Do not resent growing old. Many are denied the privilege.

Yeah, sorry. I read page one and got lazy. Just wanted to spout my opinion without having to get completely caught up.
