I Want Second Encores Back!

Hey all...long time no post.

But I figured I had to say something about the second encore situation! Terrible! The second encore is a major reason for going! What's he thinking not doing the second encore?!?!? I assume most of you agree.

I wish there was a way that we could collectively communicate our displeasure!

I PMed the Margarillas on Facebook. That probably won't do anything, but it's the only way I know to express my dissatisfaction.

If I get close enough tix to Atlanta, maybe I'll make a "WANTED" sign for the second encore ;)

by Wino you know
In Des Moines, he closed with "Gypsies In the Palace."
A really good song, but NOT for a closer.

I am hoping this trend will fall by the wayside as well. If he isn't going to close with an acoustic number, at least play something that is a deep cut.

I thought that one of the strengths of the Welcome to Fin Land tour was the set list, breaking out songs such as "The Wino and I Know," "Cuban Crime of Passion," "Havana Daydreamin'," and "Treat Her Like a Lady." For the new tour, I like the idea behind doing an acoustic session after Nadirah's "Give Henry the Check." However, there's nothing really new about the songs they're doing during the acoustic session, "Piece of Work," "Pencil Thin Moustache," and "Southern Cross." In my opinion, there are also a couple of questionable choices included in the set list, "You'll Never Work in Dis Buidness Again" and "Mermaid in the Night," which I think is a terrible song. They're not really breaking out the gems the way that they did on the Fin Land tour, so the new tour's set list, for me, is weaker so far.

Here is the encore section of the set list from last night in Houston:

First Encore
23 Jolly Mon Sing
24 Gulf Coast Highway

Band Intros
Tina Gullickson, Miss Nadirah Shakoor, Peter Mayer, Eric Darken, Lubbock,TX Flash Doyle Grisham, Mac McAnally, Roger Redfish Guth, Jim Mayer, The Happy Lad From Trinidad Robert Greenidge, Johnny Lovell, Sporting new shoes Michael Utley

Second Encores
25 Scarlet Begonias
26 Brown Eyed Girl
27 Fins

What Jimmy is doing differently and has been for a few months now is actually increasing the number of encore songs from 3 to 5 which he has not done since the mid 1990's. Jimmy changed the encores beginning with the NCAA Final four show on 04/01/12, looks like he intends to keep it that way. I know Jimmy singing a ballad as the final song has been a concert tradition for years but give the new style a chance who knows what Jimmy will do as an encore as the new tour moves along.

I don't mind the upbeat closers, but OPH to lead off the show is not my favorite. But he hasn't asked me my opinion, so I guess I'll have to make do. Put me in the "glad he's still playing anything" crowd.

Ditto for me. I prefer the closing with an intimate acoustic number...that (and OPH) is when I really feel the love in the room.

As Chippewa noted, until he asks us, just happy he's still performing.

Two problems with this new format:

1) Fins is not a good final song.

2) It's not clear that he should be ending if he doesn't go off and come back and do a single song. Doing a final set of 3 songs is confusing, particularly after doing a "first encore" (?) of 2 songs.

Also, I have noted that the last couple of shows have been pretty short. I also noticed that the shows started to get shorter during the "Summer Break" tour last year.

I don't think it is really shorter...they don't do an intermission anymore so it may just seem that way.

I've been to 5 shows already this year (Jax, Tally, Orlando, Tampa, San Jose) and the encore format has been the "traditional "format.

This is what I noticed last night during the show. I was thinking the show seemed shorter until I realized there was no intermission and I checked the time on my clock, which was 15 minutes earlier than the "song placement" had been before, and that is usually the 15 minutes of intermission.

I don't care if Fins is the last song but usually with bands, they will let you know somehow that the final song was the final song. It seemed like Buffett didn't do that with Fins last night.

27 songs last night, that's probably a couple more than most of his recent shows have been.

Where is it written that an encore (final or otherwise) should consist of one song? I've seen some bands who's encores are essentially second sets. Aside from that, encores are just a big put on anyway.

Those were the last shows that Jimmy used the 3 song finish consisting of two upbeat songs followed by a single acoustic song. The new or current encore format was introduced on 4/1/12 in New Orleans and has been used at the following: New Orleans, Omaha, Des Moines, Dallas, Kansas City, Austin and Houston.

He did 27 songs in both the Austin and Houston shows, which has been pretty standard for the last few years, so I don't see how the shows are shorter.

I don't care about not having a second encore but what does bother me is this:
1. It's Five O'Clock Somewhere
2. Knee Deep
3. Swingin’ Hula Girl
4. Sea of Heartbreak
5. Piece of Work (Acoustic w/ Peter, Jim, Mac, Eric, Nadirah and Tina)
6. Southern Cross (Acoustic w/ Peter, Jim, Mac, Eric, Nadirah and Tina)
7. All Night Long
8. Gulf Coast Highway
9. Scarlet Begonias
10. Brown Eyed Girl

Of the 27 songs in the last 2 shows, 10 of them are covers. Four of them - Knee Deep, Swingin' Hula Girl, Sea Of Heartbreak and All Night Long - have been added in the last 2 years. If he's going to keep adding new cover songs, drop some of the other s*** that he's been doing for 20+ years. He's becoming a lounge act.

Actually the last two shows in Austin and Houston were two songs longer then four shows in April. Jimmy usually averages between 25 and 29 songs per show. The most common length is either 26 or 27
