Around here (western Wisconsin) it seems to depend on the age of the person you ask and where they originally grew up (city or rural). If the person is of a rural background or under the age of 18, they're generally 'lightning bugs'; otherwise it tends to be 'fireflies'.

Grew up in central PA, now in southeast PA - we call 'em lightning bugs (although technically they're beetles, not flies or true bugs).

bravedave.... I nominate YOU to be in charge of
starting these "just because" threads.
Future possibilities:
Toilet Paper: Over or Under?
Soda, Pop or Cola?
Grinder, Hoagie or Sub?
Silverware in the dishwasher. Handles up or handles down?
you get the idea
Now THESE topics I can offer a definitive opinionated answer......Lightning Flies or Fire Bugs..........meh.
