The irony is, at 3:00 AM this morning, after getting back from a weekend trip, and after picking up my dog from the sitter, checking on my mother, a quick visit to a cousin visiting from S.C., and a few other household mundane chores, I popped in some of my Andy Griffith Show DVDs and watched a few episodes before going to bed. That was one of my all-time top five favorite TV shows, qlong with Bonanza, Gunsmoke, All In the Family, and The Honeymooners, and it sure helped me keep things in perspective. And, oh yes, many people still come up to me at work and ask if I have my bullet in my shirt pocket. Then, when I woke up around 9:30, I turned the radio news on, and heard that Andy had passed away.
As a kid, the town my father grew up in (Bridgewater, Nova Scotia) reminded me SO much of Mayberry (except their police department was HUGE-4 officers-compared to Mayberry).
Then, when I went back there in 2009, I saw they'd torn down the old railroad depot and put a Wendy's there, built a mall across the river, put a Wal Mart nearby, and the place is slowly losing it's charm.
Too bad. Andy Griffith was a true gentleman, a fantastic actor, and an American Icon who showed all of us true happiness comes from virtuous living.
