Like many others, there are some that I'm sick of, a few that I just can't stand, and many that I can never hear enough.

My observation (and that's all it was) wasn't just about this thread. I just see certain posters who love to get digs in on JB in many threads.

He's constantly criticized by some for making money or not making good music. I realize every one is entitled to an opinion but it's also on a forum where fans meet to celebrate his music and the culture that surrounds it. I'm sorry it just gets tiresome after a while and that's my opinion.

Unless someone's calling for his head to roll or something like that, I see nothing whatsoever the matter with constructive criticism. It just goes to show how passionate some fans are and I think that's a very healthy thing. I've never been one to put my favorite artists up on a pedestal where they're free of criticism and that goes for Buffett just as it does for other favorites whether it be R.E.M., the Drive-By Truckers, Guy Clark, Ryan Adams, Wilco or whoever it may be. I find the Buffett can do no wrong approach just as tiresome, if not more so, than the folks that may constantly find fault with him. As long as those opinions are expressed in a thoughtful way, I see no harm in it.

Once again not saying criticism isn't warranted in many cases but it seems to be a pattern to some posters here.

That's my only observation and it doesn't really matter because I'm sure they could care less what I think.

BTW if there is a web site for R.E.M. do they get busted on for making money?

Speaking just for myself, I'm perfectly OK with that just so long as it's done in good taste. On the other hand, you have some folks that think Buffett can do no wrong and take offense when others are even the slightest bit critical of him. It seems there is more tolerance here for differing opinions than there used to be. Again, it's all in how those opinions are expressed.

There are several R.E.M. websites out there. The one I frequent is called Murmurs. I'm not sure if they've ever been "busted on" for making money but they've certainly been accused of being sellouts on more than one occasion. To my way of thinking, when an artist signs a contract with a label they open themselves up to all sorts of criticism, including cries of "selling out". It sort of comes with the turf in the music world. It usually begins with a desire to play music just to meet members of the opposite sex. However, if that artist begins to enjoy any success at all the labels are going to come calling. So, then it also becomes a way of making a living. In other words, they're all in it to make money. Otherwise there would be no means of survival, especially if they want to make a living at their craft. Which in this case, is music. No musician is ever going to be immune to their fans being critical of them for enjoying some success and how they choose to handle it, financially or otherwise. That doesn't just go for Buffett or R.E.M., it goes for all of them.

Since you haven't gotten into specifics, I can only wager a guess that you're not fond of those of us that are critical of Buffett because his newer albums have suffered from a lack of creativity and originality due to the fact that his concentration seems to have shifted more towards non-musical endeavors such as opening restaurants, hotels and casinos. If so, those thoughts didn't even enter in my head when answering the question this thread poses.

I have Sirius/XM at home and in both cars because I originally wanted to listen to Radio Margaritaville.....and did.....all the time.

Over the past few years I grew tired of RM playing the same JB songs & even the same versions over and over. Not an uncommon thing when you listen to one station. Because of that I began exploring the other channels and now listen to a number of stations on Sirius/XM. Love the variety of music, comedy, and talk.

Now in find myself tuning into RM from time to time, but my days of playing JB only are past. This is the 2nd consecutive year that I did not attend a JB concert. Not a criticism, just changing musical tastes for me. I'll always like Jimmy's songs, but I've heard "Margaritaville" and "Cheeseburger in Paradise" enough. Just wish RM would play his lesser known tunes more often........ :pirate:
On most days I say: "Wrinkles only go where the smiles have been...."
Sometimes I can only say: "There is no dumbass vaccine......"

If something or someone gets you down, just remember: "In a hundred years it all won’t matter.........."
