Lynyrd Skynyrd--35 years--10/20/77

Post by Huey44 »

Saturday 10/20/12 marks the 35th anniversary of that tragic night when the plane carrying the band Lynyrd Skynyrd and various associates crashed near McComb, MS. The crash claimed the lives of Lynyrd Skynyrd founding member and lead vocalist Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines, backup singer Cassie Gaines (Steve's sister), assistant road manager Dean Kilpatrick, along with pilot Walter McCreary and co-pilot William Gray. The crash also injured all of the other 20 passengers to various extents from critical to minor.

Please take time to remember and give a little tribute to the band and it's fallen members Saturday 10/20/12 at 6:47 PM CST.

"...Here's to Ronnie and the boys, Now everybody make some noise!" (Jimmy Buffett, Bama Breeze)

"If I leave here tomorrow, would you still remember me?" (Lynyrd Skynyrd, Ronnie Van Zant, Free Bird)

To this day I am a G'damn menace on the road
for the entire four plus solid minutes while that guitar jam
runs during the end of Freebird. Volume set at the max.
My kids hate it.

I can remember the day Street Survivors came out and just as vividly, hearing the news about the plane crash a mere 3 days later. Definitely one of those events where I remember where I was and what I was doing when I heard the news.

Not sure if anyone's heard the new Stones song "Doom & Gloom" but the first time I heard it I wondered if the opening line was a reference to Skynyrd (except their plane went down in a Mississippi swamp):

I had a dream last night that I was piloting a plane
And all the passengers were drunk and insane
I crash landed in a Louisiana swamp
