KitchenAid Stand Mixers
I bought a stand mixer for my wife for Christmas in a moment of impulse. I saw a KitchenAid 4.5 quart model at a price that I felt I couldn't pass up. However, I don't know a thing about them. I'm wondering if anyone out there who has one could provide some advice and opinion.
Here's the link to the model I bought.
It's a 4.5 quart model. Is that big enough? It won't get a ton of use, but my wife likes baking and has said several times in the past that she wishes we could afford one. Is this worth my money or should I step it up to a higher model? I can get the 6 quart for $60 more. The great pricing is all based on rebate hassles and getting Kohl's cash with the purchase that I'd be using for other Christmas shopping.
Thoughts?

Re: KitchenAid Stand Mixers
I have had a Kitchen Aid Mixer for years (it is avocado green-does that give you a clue how old it is?). I don't use it often, but I love it. Yes, it is a good size, and the motors are pretty strong (my best friend's mom had one for so long she had the motor rebuilt--she uses hers at least once a day. Great for baking, whipping cream, and lots of other stuff. And there are a lot of attachments you can eventually get (the pouring shield can actually be quite useful so that flour doesn't fly all over the place). And I think the 6 quart one wouldn't get as much use as it is too big for a lot of things.

Judging by the attachments and the size, it looks like the one we have had for years. It still works great and the size is perfect. I can't think of anything that we have made when we needed a bigger one.

I've got one, but I never use it. I always grab the hand held mixer, but I'm not much of a baker.

We've got one. Use it semi-often. I'd stick with the 4.5 for the reasons ejr said.

I don't have one but want one.
I still use the GE stand mixer my mom gave me when she upgraded to a Kitchen Aid 20 years ago. Thats a lot of Christmas cookies ago.
Hope your wife likes her new KA.![gt-happyup [smilie=gt-happyup.gif]](./images/smilies/gt-happyup.gif)

Re: KitchenAid Stand Mixers
I have a 6qt professional model and I use it about once a week. Sometimes less, but at least once a month. I love that it is big because I can make large portions of things, such as mashed potatoes on Thanksgiving. But, for your run of the mill uses, the 4.5 qt is going to be just fine. If I were to buy one for myself (mine was a gift), I would get the 4.5 qt.
It is super handy especially for baking with the kids. You can keep the mixer going while the kiddos help pour in the ingredients. It lets you multi-task in the kitchen because you don't have to be so hands-on with the mixer in order to pour extra ingredients, etc.
It is excellent for whipping cream and making meringue.
It is a great gift. You'll probably get laid for it.

If I'll get laid for the 4.5 quart model, I'd love to find out what the 6 quart will get me! Hopefully at least laid and some brownies.tigzoe wrote:buffettbride wrote:I have a 6qt professional model and I use it about once a week. Sometimes less, but at least once a month. I needed that!
From someone who has the 6, hearing that the 4.5 will be adequate for typical use is just what I wanted to hear.

I've heard that the 6-quart plays Nautical Wheelers when it is used.

Like mine had it for 9 years or so. Don't use it much but glad I got it in purple. I bought mine when I had a side job at the last place I worked.
