I'm sure those of us of a certain vintage have heard about Jimi Hendrix' famous quote from an interview on The Tonight Show when Johnny Carson asked about his favorite upcoming guitarists and Hendrix mentioned Billy Gibbons from Moving Sidewalks. Gibbons' announcement that he's reuniting that band is definitely something I didn't see coming. Way to get 2013 off to a very intriguing start.
Billy Gibbons to Reunite His First Band, Moving Sidewalks
ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons is reuniting his first band, Moving Sidewalks, for their first concert in 44 years.
Gibbons formed Moving Sidewalks in Houston in the mid-60s with Don Summers on bass, Tom Moore on keyboards and Dan Mitchell on drums. They recorded the one album Flash and had a number one hit for six weeks in Houston with the song 99th Floor.
Moving Sidewalks opened for many of the acts of the day including Jimi Hendrix and The Doors.
The group came to an end when Summers and Mitchell were drafted into the army. Gibbons and Mitchell then formed a new band they called ZZ Top with Lanier Greig. That line-up recorded the very first ZZ Top record Salt Lick, written by Gibbons.
Moving Sidewalks will perform on March 30 at B.B. King’s Blues Club and Grill in Manhattan.
