Why Does Jimmy Consider "Come Monday" a Beach Song?

Post by F1NZUP »

I have heard him many times in concert refer to Come Monday as a beach song. The song doesn't refer to the beach or anywhere near a beach, so I have always been confused (not that difficult for me  ) why he refers to the song this way. What am I missing?

I believe it's coming from when he played that song with the "Beach Band" -- a set with just Jimmy, Mac, Ralph and Robert while the rest of the band took a break.

I was listening to the concert replay today from 10/18/1997 and he referred to Come Monday as a Key West song, so I am guessing he must have written the song while in Key West, just to possibly answer my own question.

Thanks for posting, though it doesn't really provide any further insight as to why he'd refer to it as a "beach" song. Still, very cool. I'm almost certain I've seen that before as both an avid Buffett and Letterman fan but I'd pretty much forgotten about it. Looks like it was only uploaded to YouTube late last year so, chances are, it's been out of circulation for a while. I definitely remember the other song he performed though:

Thanks for posting that. I thought JB's rapport with Letterman was very good, better than I remember his rapport with Carson being.

basically back in "Don't Stop the Carnival" times, Dave invited Jimmy on the show, they filmed it down in FL, Dave was giddy, Jimmy wasn't, and the bad feelings started.

Dave doesn't have a small ego. Jimmy's is probably a tad bigger than the stature would indicate. both decided to "whip it out" and see which stream was longer.

and the stupid thing is, at that level, it's no different than a fight in the sandbox at recess over a favourite truck

Sad, 'cause I am a fan of both. Been watching Dave since he had the morning show. Less a fan now I guess since he seems less snarky edgy and more weird cranky old man now. I think there is so much younger snarky talent out there it's time for him to hang it up before he turns in to Larry King.

And you are right, what a stupid thing for two rich celebs to be "feuding" about, especially when their schticks are based on humor, laid back lifestyle, etc. If any of it is even true...who knows?

too, you would think Dave would start to understand the Montanese mindset with the ranch out there. and like you, have been watching him since he was fresh off the TV station in Muncie.

So, as I was saying, JB and DL had a good rapport. Then, JB went on a second time, and DL was all, "Hey, JB, let's hangout." And JB was all, "No, Dude. I want to talk about my new book, "Where Is Swine Not?" And DL got all indignant and stuff and said, "No way, man. I hate musicals about pigs." So, JB was all like, "Whatever." So, DL bought a little slice of Margaritaville just so JB couldn't have it. So, JB was all like, "That's it. I'll never go on DL again. For now on, I only do the Real World." This has been another installment of Lifestyles of the Rich and Stupid."

Not that I doubt it but I was never aware that Letterman and Buffett had had a falling out so thanks for the insight. You can really tell when he is into the musical guests he has on his show. As musical director, Shaffer is the one that picks them out but I would imagine Letterman has some input as well. One example would be Jason Isbell, who both Shaffer and Letterman have taken a real shining to. So much so, that he had Isbell play an event at his place in Montana last summer. As for Buffett's rapport with Johnny Carson, I think it also came across really well on camera though Carson was known for being pretty private off the set. For one thing, Buffett was a frequent musical guest during Carson's reign and most of the time he had Buffett come over to his desk to chit-chat during his appearances. Many of his musical guests were never had that privilege. Same thing for the comedians Carson had on his show. If he asked them over to his desk, it meant he was really enamored of them.

Johnny Carson was the King of Late Night and the standard by which all others are to be measured. Letterman, Leno, Conan, Kimmel, and the other pretenders to the throne, including those that have already been found wanting and are back to doing standup gigs on someone else's show, ought to be grateful that they are privileged enough to be allowed to stand in his shadow.

I can't say that I've ever thought of Letterman as a "pretender". He had the utmost respect from Carson and came by it very honestly. In fact, he was one of those fledgling comedians that got asked over to speak with Carson following his routines on The Tonight Show. He was also one of the guest hosts of the program during those days. Carson didn't allow just anyone to do that. Despite all the brouhaha that ensued when Leno took over The Tonight Show, it was pretty clear that Letterman and Carson had a very different and genuine relationship than most. Carson appeared on Letterman's show not long afterwards and even brought his own desk, which was hilarious. There for a while Letterman was also reading scripts written by Carson himself as part of his nightly monologues. I never saw that sort of respect extended to anyone else, Leno included. Any time the subject of Carson comes up, Letterman speaks of him in the highest regard. Never once has he said anything disrespectful or made himself out to be the "king of late night". That honor always goes to Carson so I don't get the impression that Letterman is any sort of pretender, not in the least. In fact, it's quite the opposite. Letterman always downplays his role as one of Carson's successors (even though Leno actually got the job on The Tonight Show).

As someone that grew up watching Carson on The Tonight Show, I can say there will never be another like him, Letterman included. I think all of the people you have mentioned in addition to Letterman have also readily acknowledged the role Carson played in paving the way for late night talk shows such as The Tonight Show. Never once do I recall any of them showing even the slightest bit of disrespect towards him. So, I disagree that any of them are "pretenders". Without Carson, Jack Parr and Steve Allen, there most likely wouldn't be late night talk shows and all of the folks you mention have no problem mentioning that whenever the topic comes up.
