why were the ships not able to dumb their holding tanks out at sea? i wonder if the generators did not operate the holding pumps...looks like they would have some type of manual system to dump...
There's this one particular harbor.....

Carnival's holding company owns 49.2% of all cruise lines including Cunard and Princess.nutmeg wrote:pbans wrote:Since this is the second time it's happened, I've DEFINITELY crossed Carnival off of my list as potential cruise lines! Check into how many cruise lines Carnival owns!
I haven't been on a cruise in 15 years but Royal Carribean and Norwegian Cruise lines were very comfortable. Cruising can be fun but it takes a good group to make it work. Think of it as a traveling pre concert tailgate with really expensive boat drinks.
Re: Stranded cruise ship/mother in law
I will be happy too. One of my very good friend's sister and her husband and a few other couples from my parents' church are on that cruise.dnw wrote:I'll be so happy when those passengers get home to their families, friends and loved ones. What a nightmare!
Yes, what a nightmare. I know they are finding comfort being with close friends though.

NONE of the great ones... in the last 16 months, Carnival Cruise Line Ships have been either stranded or sunk.nutmeg wrote:pbans wrote:Since this is the second time it's happened, I've DEFINITELY crossed Carnival off of my list as potential cruise lines! Re: Stranded cruise ship/mother in law
I've cruised on Royal Caribbean, Disney and Carnival.
My kid is grown, so Disney doesn't hold much for me anymore.....
but I enjoyed the RC cruise a lot.
Honestly, I think I've had enough of cruising.....it's a week of gluttony and crowds....
I still just want to rent the island at French Louie Caye for a week and go all sorts of Gilligan.

Seriously, if you really want a Giligans' Island experience, check out Jeep Island in Micronesia.pbans wrote:...SNIP...

It is tiny and massively isolated - but the resort will bring food and foo-foo drink supplies each day...

A bit bigger but no less Gilligans' Island is Tranquillity Resort in Vanuatu

I've visited both and they are for hard-core kicking back and extreme relaxing. Well if you can get over the urge to keep a look out for the Professor or Mary-Anne...

Federal law prohibits the discharge of untreated sewage from vessels within navigable waters of the United States, which include territorial seas within three miles of shore and most bays and estuaries. Boats with Type I and II marine sanitation devices (MSD's) may discharge treated effluent in coastal waters unless they are in a no discharge area.sunseeker wrote:why were the ships not able to dumb their holding tanks out at sea? i wonder if the generators did not operate the holding pumps...looks like they would have some type of manual system to dump...

Nancy - are your friends of friends all safe now? Bus broke down, really?
"For Carnival and the rest of the cruise line industry, the implications are potentially devastating. The deadly capsizing in January 2012 of the Costa Concordia ship off the coast of Italy still lingers in the public's mind. About a month later, the Costa Allegra liner suffered a similar engine fire, lost power, and was set adrift in pirate-infested waters in the Indian Ocean. Carnival owns Costa Cruises, and now a third high-profile crisis for Carnival in just over a year threatens to cement the perception among vacationers that cruising might not be worth the risk."
RC is my choice, I will cruise again.

Yes - I know you can't dump untreated sewage less than 3 miles out. Treated can be within the 3 miles. I just thought they were further out than 3 miles....big john wrote:Federal law prohibits the discharge of untreated sewage from vessels within navigable waters of the United States, which include territorial seas within three miles of shore and most bays and estuaries. They showed the broken down bus on tv. Nightline news or whatever is on CBS.

They all just finally got home about 5 this evening. Lots of stories, and they sound ok. They did say it was dreadful and worse than most people can imagine. But y'all've seen the news today. Eeeeewwwww.

Never had the cruise ship experience and it don't really care too. This whole terrible ordeal will go a long way for reasons you don't want to waste your money on a cruise ship.
