When he said it on Crossroads, I took it as a joke. Especially when one of the guys from Zac's band sang a couple of lines in an "Elvis" voice as, if I remember correctly, a lead in to a commercial break. But I could be wrong, it's happened once or twice before.Tiki Torches wrote:Who knows. According to a post I included in this thread from the All Things Music Plus page on Facebook, he divulged the Elvis tidbit during his appearance on CMT's Crossroads with Zac Brown. I've heard him tell the story of Margaritaville years back and never mention Elvis.
Makes a good story though, one of those Semi-true stories imo. As he says, "the truth is stranger than fishin"

Hey dudes & Dudettes.
I got the Elvis tid-bit from a good Jock friend of mine Pat St.John. He does 101.1WCBS-FM in NYC on sundays from 11a to3p. The rest of the week he does SiriusXM '50's on 5' from 6a to noon. From Noon to 6p he does 'ClassicRewind'. From 6.p to midnite he does 'BB's BluesVille'.
He didn't know about the 4:20 version either. It's right on the wcbs101.1.com website. It's an article under 'News' "5 Things you never knew about Margaritaville". It's still up. You just have to go back on the music news pg. a few days. IT mentions everything I posted. Written by Jimmy with Elvis in mind only he had to take the 'Dump' before he had a chance. Pat's looking for some info from his friends on SiriusXM's ElvisRadio. Maybe a demo?
I'll keep y'all posted.
I've been listening since his 1st LP came out. Around '76-'77 He used to be the Surf Movie Night SoundTrack. Every saturday night at the Seaside Park 1st Aid Squad. They'd run movies like Endless Summer or reels of locals. If you knew Grogs Surf Shop, you went to movie night and heard nothing but Jimmy! very cool.

Pat St. John's been around for a long time. I remember listening to him on WPLJ years ago. I think he may have been on WNEW too when it used to be a good station.

Just watched that show tonight, I don't think he was serious, either. Jimmy did say he wrote the song the same year Elvis died, so I guess we never had the chance to find out.LIPH wrote:When he said it on Crossroads, I took it as a joke. Jimmy had the chance to tell the Elvis tidbit in the Parrot Head Handbook that's with the box set but doesn't mention it.
He basically said it was about a drink in Austin Texas. The Elvis bit on Crossroads came accross like a joke to me too. Me thinks the DJ and the website got the info from the episode of Crossroads.
I'd believe it was written for Freddy Fender over Elvis
