Bon Jovi & Spin Doctors: Why It's OK To Like Terrible Music

Post by Tiki Torches »

Can't say I've ever been a fan of Bon Jovi (or hair metal in general) but I did wear out my copy of Pocketful of Kryptonite back in the early 90's.

The only band mentioned in the article that I'm not familiar with is The Five Stairsteps. If you're referring to the cassettes, I haven't heard of most of those either.

You've heard of The Five Stairsteps? I watched the clip but it didn't really ring any bells with me. I can relate to the article though. For years I abstained from Classic Rock radio thanks to Sirius/XM. It was that abstinence that enabled me to enjoy listening to Boston again. I doubt it lasts for long though as it's the nature of that format to beat the already overly familiar into the ground. It was a nice flashback to 1976 when that album still sounded fresh though.

Not I, then again it appears that their biggest single ("Ooh Child") was a hit in 1970 so that would probably explain why it never registered on my radar. Out of all the cassettes, the only one I recognize is The Figgs though I believe I may spy a Bad Brains tape in there on the bottom right. 149 Dead Marines isn't a bad band name though.

I'm not sure what it says about me but I remember (quite well, though not necessarily quite fondly) The Five Stairsteps and "Ooh Child".
And "Jimmy Olsen's Blues" is one of my ringtones.
And none of the groups on those cassettes rings a bell ..... although I find the name Sarcastic Orgasm strangely intriguing.

Some of my friends I took Broadcasting with back in the 80's started putting together podcasts for an online version of our college radio station within the last year or so. In so doing, several of us included songs we aren't necessarily fond of now but they trigger memories of our college radio days. It's those sort of songs that this article reminds me of.

For the record, I've never hated Rush but I've definitely encountered a lot of people that do. Maybe even more than those that hate Jimmy Buffett.
