Songs from St. S - Mark Knopfler (Dire Straits) influence?

Post by krusin1 »

Just played the mp3 version of Songs from St. Somewhere. Had it on while I was working, so I didn't get to listen as close as I would have liked.

That being said.... I caught a lot of interesting guitar work going on.

If I understand correctly, Mark Knopfler (from Dire Straits, also soundtrack of The Princess Bride) had something to do with "Oldest Surfer on the Beach." He's a top-shelf guitar player and writer and has some distinctive sounds.

(BTW.... I definitely don't mean any disrespect to Peter Mayer, who is amazing in his own right - and yes, I've seen him live, on his own, twice!)

Just wondering.... anybody know if Knopfler had a part in the rest of the album? Sure sounds like he could have........... :D

I don't have the album in hand at present so I'm unable to consult the liner notes but on the preview of the record that Buffett hosted on Radio Margaritaville last night he said that Knopfler came to him with "Oldest Surfer On the Beach" as he had Buffett in mind with the song. I realize that doesn't answer your question about whether or not Knopfler plays on the record but it is rather flattering that he was indirectly inspired by Buffett to pen the song. At least that's the gist I got out of it.

This USA Today article that was posted over at B u f f e t t World says Knopfler "appears on the album", it just doesn't say which tracks.

Whoop de Doo on the Take the Weather with You album is also a Knopfler song and he played guitar on that track.

I know the voices in my head aren't real, but sometimes they have really good ideas....

Yes, MK played on Oldest Surfer on the Beach.

Jimmy said Mark also played his 1931 acoustic D18 Martin on Rue De La Guitare, while Jimmy played his 1951 acoustic D18 Martin.

Jimmy also said Will Kimbrough played on some of the album.

I don't have the actual CD liner notes yet, but maybe those will help.

Just listening to Rue De La Guitare and Doyle's pedal steel is great too.

Thanks to all for the insights. Pretty cool stuff, if you ask me. I've been a Mark Knopfler fan since the 80s and it's awesome he and JB collaborate.

Man, I'd love to see Jimmy and Mark play those vintage guitars "live." Just thinking about it... wow. :D

Start your campaign now for the show you'll be at so Jimmy will play for you. :)

He says that 1951 D18 guitar is his favorite. He's satisfied and doesn't need the old one that was stolen from him or the acoustic he had to trade in when he could only afford one guitar and needed an electric to play rock n roll. :)

The SFSS Radio Show really is special.

Jimmy and Mark shared stories about the Martin D19s they played and Mark plays the middle guitar solo on "Rue de la Guitare" Mark also wrote and plays on "Oldest surfer on the beach." I am a great fan of Knopfller and years ago I heard his influence in the final guitar solo on "Diamond as big as the Ritz. " Listen to it again.
Knopfler is playing on the West Coast the same week Jimmy is playing Vegas and Denver. Wouldn't a surprise appearance be great ?

Jimmy might not have wrote The Oldest Surfer On The Beach but Mark wrote it specifically for Jimmy.
