I was a hip hop DJ years ago and still have my 2 turntables and mixer. I've got quite a few Buffett albums and other artists on wax.
You can buy record players in stores. I've even seen them in Target for example, the kind that are made to look old fashioned.

This is corny but the one thing I would actually want a record player for is my parents' old holiday records. Nothing particularly noteworthy, just memories from growing up. Big Band Christmas is my fave, I just love Christmas Night in Harlem.

sonofabeach wrote:I was in Target the other day and saw a whopping 3 albums on vinyl vs about 3000 cds so I'm not so sure about this vinyl resurgence. Same at Best Buy last time I was in there. While I like living in the past as much as the next guy, I don't see it catching on enough to matter. I download some stuff but I usually buys cds which have liner notes and sound better than wax anyway. & I don't think Parrotmonkey got shot down my most here, I think it was more lack of interest. While I think it would be nice, I don't think I care enough about it. Funny, I was just thinking the other day that the packaging of Jimmy last few albums remind me of vinyl. I think Jimmy does a fine job with liner notes and pics and as stated above, the lyrics are inside.
While Best Buy and Target may stock vinyl, the big box stores are downsizing their music sections in general due to the popularity of downloading. One of the Best Buys here (Raleigh) had nearly an entire aisle devoted to vinyl but it's since been eliminated altogether. Eventually, the only places you will be able to buy music in a physical format will be at record stores. I realize those are few and far between but they do exist. Those are the places where the majority of the public is going to go in search of vinyl anyway, not the big boxes as the people that shop at the big box stores aren't really the target market. There are also numerous online outlets that specialize in vinyl such as MusicDirect. As I mentioned, vinyl sales are minuscule compared to downloading and I've never stated otherwise. However, the fact of the matter remains that vinyl sales continue to be on the upswing year after year. If you doubt me, check this link. I have also never made the case that vinyl is of superior audio quality but there are plenty of audiophiles out there that feel very strongly about it. As I posted in this thread a while back it really doesn't have that much to do with nostalgia or sound quality to me so it's not so much about "living in the past" as it is about having a more interactive experience when listening to music. As Shelby Lynne once said, "you can't roll a joint on an iPod".

On the Buffett reissue tip, I'm sure most everyone here would buy expanded remasters of his albums if he were ever to go that route. Vinyl's more of a speciality niche but considering the age range of his audience I'm positive there would be interest in that as well. Lots of younger folks are just as interested in vinyl as baby boomers, if not more so.

There are also plenty of places to buy state of the art turntables. While I'm sure nostalgia plays a part for some folks, it's not what is solely driving the popularity of vinyl.

Soon to come: International Cassette Day.

It may be corny but I agree. There's some special about those old Crosby, Sinatra, and Mathis Christmas records.

Wasn't sure about this song the 1st time I heard it, but I've grown to like it. Like the steel drums and the story. Captures the quirkiness of FLA in a Carl Hiaasen way. Still can't figure out how Earl died, which I do think is a flaw in the song. Have it down to 2 possibilities: car accident or suicide. If the car is wrecked, how's Moon Vine going to sell it? If it was suicide, sure is subtle in the song. Unclear. And that's my biggest complaint. Like the song, and wouldn't be surprised if JB plays it this winter in So FLA.

I think that's the idea ... it's just an enigmatic sign Jimmy claims to have seen ... it makes you think.

Like the famous six word line (with a lot of claims as to its origin) ..... For sale: baby shoes, never worn

Or the metal records of my mom's singing that a friend cut back in the 1940s when she was performing on live radio.

You remember radio?  You know, TV without the pictures?

History Channel had a segment Modern Marvels about the making of vinyl records.

Hey, Jimmy!!

I would like a vinyl copy of Songs from St Somewhere with all the nice liner notes--photos, lyrics, etc.

I'd take one of each album since Off To See The Lizard.

That's the Earl I thought about too when I saw the title of the song.

The song also made me think of Hunter Thompson's ashes being shot from a cannon.
