No mention of Jimmy Buffett, but THIS sounds pretty promising. See the movie trailer link below.

Muscle Shoals Movie
About The Film

Located alongside the Tennessee River, Muscle Shoals, Alabama is the unlikely breeding ground
for some of America's most creative and defiant music. Under the spiritual influence of the "Singing River,"
as Native Americans called it, the music of Muscle Shoals has helped create some of the most important
and resonant songs of all time. At its heart is Rick Hall who founded FAME Studios.

Overcoming crushing poverty and staggering tragedies, Hall brought black and white together
in Alabama's cauldron of racial hostility to create music for the generations. He is responsible for
creating the "Muscle Shoals sound" and The Swampers, the house band at FAME
that eventually left to start their own successful studio, known as Muscle Shoals Sound.
Greg Allman, Bono, Clarence Carter, Mick Jagger, Etta James, Alicia Keys, Keith Richards, Percy Sledge
and others bear witness to Muscle Shoals' magnetism, mystery and why it remains influential today.

It's played close to me a couple times in recent months but I missed it both times. It was at the Full Frame Documentary Festival in Durham back in the spring and more recently there was a screening of it in Winston-Salem at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts in June that was followed by a panel discussion hosted by Jim Lauderdale with Muscle Shoals musicians Spooner Oldham, Dan Penn and David Hood (father of Patterson Hood of the Drive-By Truckers).

As of today you can watch it On Demand or on iTunes. It opens in theatres nationwide tomorrow.

The documentary is excellent. Enjoyed watching (and got 10,000 steps while watching). :)

Coconut Telegraph was shown distinctly when they were showing all the vinyl record covers they produced. It was recorded at Muscle Shoals Studio and produced by Norbert Putnam.

Of course, Stars Fell on Alabama is on there along with It's My Job, which charted as a single. It was probably the beginning of Jimmy's relationship with Mac. :) ?? Right??

Thanks for the reminder.

Even though I was aware of Muscle Shoals due to Skynyrd's mention of the Swampers in "Sweet Home Alabama" (I believe it was Leon Russell who actually coined the term), it was the Drive-By Truckers' championing of the Shoals that really made me sit up and take notice. Early on they spoke very highly of Eddie Hinton (and even recorded a song dedicated to him called "Sandwiches For the Road") but it wasn't until the Dangerous Highway: A Tribute To The Songs of Eddie Hinton project in 2009 when they covered "Where's Eddie?" b/w "Everybody Needs Love" (both of which also ended up on 2011's Go-Go Boots) that I actively sought out any of his music. Due to my exposure to a lot of the music that came out of the Shoals it has also helped to open my ears to a lot of Soul and R & B records I hadn't really paid that much attention to before.

For anyone that may be interested, here's the setlist of songs performed by Candi Station, Gregg Allman, Patterson Hood and Percy Sledge at the premiere of Muscle Shoals in NYC earlier this week:

It went way back to the song "You Better Move On" and to "When A Man Loves A Woman" by Percy Sledge. Great history of music.

Glad I got to spend some time in the area while doing the Natchez Trace Parkway. Beautiful scenery. Interesting story about Tom Hendrix and his rock wall. :)

I learned so much about Rick Wall.

(End credits said Mac McAnally was also instrumental in producing this documentary. It made me think of Mac including I Heard It Through the Grapevine on Live In Muscle Shoals.)

I learned Patterson Hood is the son of David Hood. :)

Yep, I've mentioned that here many times over the years (including in this thread). Like I mentioned earlier, the Truckers played a huge role in putting Muscle Shoals back on the map for me (see "Ronnie & Neil" from Southern Rock Opera below). I was going to wait to see the movie in Durham next month but couldn't wait any longer and watched it on iTunes last night. I thought it was very well done and the vintage footage was very cool to see. Having just attended a tribute to Gram Parsons last week, the part where the Stones were recording "Wild Horses" really hit home with me, as did the section on Skynyrd. I've also been getting into a good bit of Southern Soul and R & B as of late so I'm even more appreciative of it after having seen the Muscle Shoals documentary.

Church blew up in Birmingham
Four little black girls killed for no God damn good reason
All this hate and violence can't come to no good end
A stain on the good name.
A whole lot of good people dragged through the blood and glass
Blood stains on their good names and all of us take the blame

Meanwhile in North Alabama, Wilson Pickett comes to town
To record that sweet soul music, to get that Muscle Shoals sound

Meanwhile in North Alabama, Aretha Franklin comes to town
To record that sweet soul music, to get that Muscle Shoals sound

And out in California, a rock star from Canada writes a couple of great songs about the
Bad sh*t that went down
"Southern Man" and "Alabama" certainly told some truth
But there were a lot of good folks down here and Neil Young wasn't around

Meanwhile in North Alabama, Lynyrd Skynyrd came to town
To record with Jimmy Johnson at Muscle Shoals Sound
And they met some real good people, not racist pieces of sh*t
And they wrote a song about it and that song became a hit

Ronnie and Neil Ronnie and Neil
Rock stars today ain't half as real
Speaking their minds on how they feel
Let them guitars blast for Ronnie and Neil

Now Ronnie and Neil became good friends their feud was just in song
Skynyrd was a bunch of Neil Young fans and Neil he loved that song
So he wrote "Powderfinger" for Skynyrd to record
But Ronnie ended up singing "Sweet Home Alabama" to the Lord

And Neil helped carry Ronnie in his casket to the ground
And to my way of thinking, us southern men need both of them around

Ronnie and Neil Ronnie and Neil Rock stars today ain't half as real
Speaking their minds on how they feel
Let them guitars blast for Ronnie and Neil

The movie is fantastic! I saw it in August in Newport, RI, where it showed after the Newport Folk Festival. Fascinating, all the artists that came through Muscle Shoals.

I've been to Tom's Wall. It's a very special place and Tom Hendrix is a fascinating man to talk to.

It's too bad I got Muscle Shoals on PPV when I had hours and hours of SGM&FF to spend time on.

So much music. So little time. Will have to watch again sometime.

Be sure to tune into Letterman tonight for Candi Staton backed by Swampers David Hood, Jimmy Johnson and Spooner Oldham. Joining them will be John Paul White (The Civil Wars) and Jason Isbell. The good money is on them performing I’m Not Easy to Love" which was recorded at Fame Studios in the Shoals.

Yes, it is. At least according to this article. It's also listed on Letterman's website.
