Haynes and Trucks leaving Allmans
Technically not "Related Artist" news (but JB and Mac did slip in a little "Midnight Rider" into "Great Filling Station Holdup", so close enough for me). I have to wonder if this signals the end of the Allmans; I hope not, but you never know....

No big surprise IMO regarding Trucks. Haynes......a bit but still not really earth shattering. Will be interesting if they call it good or bring somebody in. (return of Dickey Betts anyone)?

I don't let the Related Artists thing stop me from posting about other bands/artists here. I love Buffett but not everything I listen to is related to him.
I seriously doubt Dickey will ever be allowed back into the fold. If that was going to happen it would have occurred when they did their 40th Anniversary run at the Beacon back in 2009 which was rife with special guests from throughout their career. Right after his last surgery Gregg Allman said that the Allmans would be doing fewer and fewer shows in the years to come and that it would eventually result in winding the ABB down altogether. I can see the departure of Warren and Dickey helping to expedite this. There has been some talk of bringing Luther Dickinson of the North Mississippi Allstars in but that's only at the rumor stage at the moment.

This is just Derek's side of it, I'm not sure how the remaining members of the ABB would feel about it.

I tend to agree, but then again, no ever thought they'd see Waters, Gilmour, Wright, & Mason on stage together again, and it did happen (though only a one off), so never say never......Tiki Torches wrote:This is just Derek's side of it, I'm not sure how the remaining members of the ABB would feel about it.

As much as I loath Messrs. Henley and Frey for being the pretentious hypocrites that they are, the wife got us tickets for the current go round, and I must say I enjoyed it greatly; due mostly to the inclusion of Bernie Leadon, and of course, Joe Walsh, who owned the second half of the show - Funk #49 still kicks major a.Tiki Torches wrote:Completely different scenario and sadly, one that continues to this day. On the "Funk #49" tip, I'm hoping Walsh actually gets around to the James Gang tour he's hinted at that could potentially happen after the current Eagles tour.PeretHed66 wrote:As much as I loath Messrs. Re: Haynes and Trucks leaving Allmans
I have heard for years the reason Dickie was released & was not with the Allman Bros was because of Derek's Uncle Butch Trucks. Story I heard was when the rest of the Allmans cleaned up, Dickie did not & Butch wanted him gone. I also understand that Dickie still owns a a piece of the Allman Brothers Corporation.Tiki Torches wrote:This is just Derek's side of it, I'm not sure how the remaining members of the ABB would feel about it.

That makes sense. And even though this happened after the split, I always figured this sort of behavior had a lot to do with why he's never been welcomed back into the band and most likely, never will.a1aara wrote:I have heard for years the reason Dickie was released & was not with the Allman Bros was because of Derek's Uncle Butch Trucks. Probably the right call, but still disappointing to see them end. One of my favorites.Tiki Torches wrote:Allman Brothers Band Calling it Quits

Re: Haynes and Trucks leaving Allmans
As Gregg mentions in the article, I could see them continuing to do something like their residencies at the Beacon (as well as other venues) in the years to come. In recent years he'd mentioned a desire to start scaling back on shows, that moment is now here, it just arrived far sooner than anyone was expecting.PeretHed66 wrote:Probably the right call, but still disappointing to see them end. Re: Haynes and Trucks leaving Allmans
Picked up the "latest" release on Tuesday, "Play All Night: Live at the Beacon Theatre 1992" (I say "latest" since this is a 22 year old show). Great set with the Allman/Betts/Haynes/Woody/Trucks/Jaimoe/Quinones lineup. Check out track list:
TRACK LIST
DISC 1
1. Statesboro Blues 7:00
2. You Don’t Love Me 6:38
3. End Of The Line 5:45
4. Blue Sky 7:34
5. Nobody Knows 13:20
6. Low Down Dirty Mean 7:20
7. Seven Turns 4:41
8. Midnight Rider 3:20
9. Come On In My Kitchen 6:02
DISC 2
1. Guitar Intro / Hoochie Coochie Man 10:01
2. Jessica 10:01
3. Get On With Your Life 8:18
4. In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed 20:58
5. Revival 5:46
6. Dreams 11:20
7. Whipping Post 11:36
Actually ordered it from Amazon, immediately downloaded it via the AutoRip feature; CD itself should be at the house when I get home, love to check out the liner notes (I think I'm the only person left out there who still likes CDs, primarily because of liner notes, etc.)
Good stuff indeed, highly recommended if you're a fan.
(NOTE: Edited because I just found out that it's not from one complete show, it's the best of two nights from that Beacon run, sequenced as a typical show.)

Re: Haynes and Trucks leaving Allmans
You're not alone, I also love liner notes and still purchase CD's as well as vinyl. I also use my iPod and iTunes but mainly what's in my library are CD's of my own that I've ripped, I've actually purchased very few downloads since becoming mp3 friendly around 5 years ago. There has been a resurgence in vinyl sales over the past ten years which is proof positive that there are others out there that also desire album artwork, liner notes, etc. and prefer the sound quality of vinyl over compressed digital files (and yes, I realize there is also the option of high res files but a lot of folks still prefer the physical object of CD's, vinyl and even cassettes). A few years back, there was a debate here about the possibility of Buffett reissuing expanded, remastered versions of his albums on CD. This was mainly due to poor sound quality as well as the lack of liner notes, artwork, etc. for some of his early titles but quite a few people here were very vocal in their disapproval. However, I'm sure that if he were to actually reissue remasters of those albums that nearly everyone here would be first in line to buy them.PeretHed66 wrote:Actually ordered it from Amazon, immediately downloaded it via the AutoRip feature; CD itself should be at the house when I get home, love to check out the liner notes (I think I'm the only person left out there who still likes CDs, primarily because of liner notes, etc.)
On the early 90's Allman Brothers tip, this was the first time I ever saw Derek Trucks perform. Later, during the Allmans' set, he came out and sat in on "One Way Out", giving Dickey Betts a real run for his money.

Read "One Way Out" over the weekend, oral history of the ABB. Fascinating book, especially when band members/crew/managers/etc remembered the same event differently. Much better than the recent Little Feat book, in my opinion.

Re: Haynes and Trucks leaving Allmans
Thanks for the heads up. I haven't read it (or Gregg's bio) but I did see this article on One Way Out just the other day. One quote from Gregg that caught my attention was this, "“The Grateful Dead? Well, I never really thought so much of them.” I found that odd considering their history with the Grateful Dead, not to mention the fact that the Allmans still cover Grateful Dead tunes (as well as tunes made famous by the Dead) to this very day. From what I understand, Gregg wasn't too fond of Jerry Garcia referring to him as a narc after the Scooter Herring incident in the 70's.PeretHed66 wrote:Read "One Way Out" over the weekend, oral history of the ABB.
