For what it's worth, I do know that Jimmy is very aware of the many problems that Northerly Island presented and he was not happy about them. We will see if he plays there again, if so, I may be skipping Chicago for the first time in a very long time.

Completely agreed. It was awful on many levels.

The problem is, is that there isn't a "perfect" venue to be in. Toyota has good sightlines, nice staff, good sound, but the tailgating is ok, (depends which car you are, the front car or the rear) Tinley has tons of space but with the no tailgating issue, mediocre sound and staff that's willy-nilly, makes it hard. I got blasted last year because I said that Northerly Island was a horrible place to have a show at, just because it was at the beach people were overlooking obvious things, like parking, tailgating, venue sightlines......, and it's funny how now people hate it. We need a place that's perfect, that holds tons of cars for the tailgating, great sound, good sightlines, just an all-round great experience, but like everything, it's just a dream, so I guess we have to make some compromises, the thing is, just what is it that you're willing to give up. I'll say this, if it's at Northerly again, this will be the second year I won't go, just not worth it.

You're on point. I would be willing to flex on any of the shortcomings of Toyota or Tinley if it means avoiding Northerly.

This comes down to money as do most things. Northerly gives Jimmy and his corporation much more kickback because of the dollars it brings to the city in hotel and dining revenue. He has the pre-party and Margaritaville Navy Pier, generating more revenue for himself, and then gets a portion of the inflated parking fees imposed. I can guarantee you that his take is nearly double what he would get from Toyota or Tinley for these reasons. We all love him and his music, and he's a nice guy and all, but this is a job and he'll take what he can get.
Regardless, I will go to the Chicago show wherever it is as I have for many years with our group, but I'll be adding another location to at least help with the impending disappointment.

Not to mention that he's tied to Live Nation as are most performers. Northerly and Tinley are both Live Nation venues. Toyota Park is not. Live Nation spent big $$$$ on the "improvements" to Northerly Island and wants to fill it all summer.

Reading about all the financial reasons for him to play at Northerly Island again is discouraging, mostly because you are probably right.
Tinley is closer to our house, but we really really liked Toyota. I didn't wait in long lines for the bathroom or concessions. Tinley? A different story.
Either way, I'm betting it'll be June 28th. I only say that because that's the weekend it was the past two years. Toyota had the later summer dates, it seemed.
I'm hoping for an announcement today, though!! Please!

As any business, he is looking to make money. I understand that completely. I am not sure the amount he brought in from the "pre-party" last year as it was less that mediocre. If Jimmy is smart, like I'm sure he is, he will make more money off of tailgating with parking costs. Northerly makes it easy to walk to and from a hotel and not having to pay for any extras. I am going to Chicago to Jimmy because, lets face it, the show and experience is still great. I am just hoping for a good venue, cold drinks and great tailgating with fellow Parrotheads!

Jimmy makes about the same no matter what venue. Live Nation owns Meigs Field/Charter One/Northerly Island/First Merit Bank whatever the name of the month is, and they also own The World/New World/Tweeter/First Midwest (Im sure I missed one in there).
Jimmy makes a killing. From what I have heard they almost pay him to come there because he makes like 100% or more of the concessions too.
I prefer Tinley because hell its only a 15 minute drive for me and I know all the back ways around the place to avoid anything I don't want or need to deal with.

Tinley is gawd awful! Horrible traffic, parking lot is a nightmare, gestapo security, no tailgating, sound is the worst of any venue I have been to unless you are in there first 10 rows. Other than those minor flaws, yeah its awesome

Alpine ftw...if you can find somewhere to stay that's not 30+ miles away.

I have always been surprised he doesn't play Soldier Field. The bears and stadium know how to handle tailgating, the revenue would beat 2 nights anywhere else in Chicago, and he could still tie it in with the worst margaritaville there is.

Security is horrible ANYWHERE you go. I was harassed one year at a Alpine show because I was sober and watching the show from the bottom of the lawn. You can tailgate, but only for buffett. That doesn't mean you still can't drink in the parking lot, you just have to walk around with your beer. Parking is fine there, yeah it may be mostly rocks, but there is 3 or 4 different entrances into the place unlike Alpine which has one way in, one way out.

I was harassed one year at a Alpine show because I was sober and watching the show from the bottom of the lawn. wut? You can tailgate, but only for buffett This is not even close to being true. We party as hard and probably longer for Phish, DMB, and Jack Johnson too..

unlike Alpine which has one way in, one way out. There are at least three entrances to Alpine that I know of.

I'm hoping for 6/28 in Tinley. Northerly Island is nice, but it doesn't work for me for a Buffett concert.
Toyota Park is off the table due to it not being a Live Nation venue.

1. Aforementioned lawn quality blew
2. Couldn't hear music in lawn
3. Can't see stage from lawn
4. Tailgating sucks
5. Concession operators disorganized and slow
6. Warm beer
I'd be happy with Tinley or Toyota at this point. Those are veritable paradises compared to Northerly.
Add the following to the list of problems at Northerly:
8. Insufficient number of Port-a-Potties for the lawn area
9. One concert goer had to be removed by stretcher after two brawling drunks fell on her causing to end up with five broken bones in her right foot

What about Wrigley? rickets is all about the money. There are lots of bars. That way, I could listen for free while I sell beer there. Anywhere other than tinley park. I didn't go see him at Northerly island. From what I have heard, Northerly island was crap. Just as liong as I get to see him this Year. July or August. The snow should be gone by Aug.

Since when has Phish played in Tinley??? 1990s is the last I remember of that.
