Also from David Menconi of the Raleigh News & Observer, a look back at a vintage article he wrote about Cry of Love when they were opening for Aerosmith in the spring of 1994.

Despite the fact that "Peace Pipe" went to #1 on the rock charts in '93 and Cry of Love toured with the likes of Heart, Aerosmith and Skynyrd, this is the first publication outside the state of NC I've seen to even acknowledge Kelly's untimely passing. Most of it's content comes from the New & Observer articles I posted above.

If you grew up in North Carolina in the 1980's, chances are, you saw Sidewinder at some point. Over 30 different people passed through the band over the years, this is the lineup that included Robert Kearns (Cry of Love, Bottle Rockets, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Sheryl Crow, etc.) and Audley Freed (Cry of Love, Black Crowes, Sheryl Crow, etc.). They were a show band that did mainly covers and at one point, ended up on Star Search though they radically changed their sound for the appearance (there are clips on YouTube). It was around that same time they sued the Sidewinders from Arizona, forcing them to legally change their name to the Sand Rubies. The legal entanglements that ensued sent them into a tailspin and they lost all the momentum they had built up. Sidewinder continues to perform on occasion and I see the Sidewinders are performing at SXSW this year. To the best of my knowledge, there have been no lawsuits this time.
