Courtney Love, proving once again...

...that she's an idiot.

Maybe she should take a listen to what is widely acknowledged as the first rock and roll song, "Rocket 88" by Jackie Brenston and his Delta Cats. What's that I hear behind the lead vocals, right out of the gate? Oh yeah, a saxophone.

I was going to post JB's "Saxophones" here, but all I could find on YouTube was the remake. Just doesn't do it for me like the original, even though it does have the horns. Your mileage may vary, of course.

Finding asinine comments like this made by Courtney Love is akin to shooting fish in a barrel. Of course, saxophones belong in rock n' roll and as you point out, they're part of the very basis of it. That said, when I first started getting into music as a little kid in the 70's, I wasn't always the biggest fan of horns but as I got older and my tastes matured, I grew to love that sound. When I first read this post, the very first song I thought of was "Shotgun" by Junior Walker & the All Stars. It wasn't like I'd never heard of him before but what first put him on my musical map in a big way was "Urgent" by Foreigner. I was never especially a big fan of that song or that band but there was no way one could ignore the saxophone solo in that song.

Yeah, I know she's an easy target, but I still get surprised.

Big big fan of live horns; except, surprisingly enough, in Jimmy's music. Not sure why, and they do work in some songs, but overall, they just don't do much for me in his work. Go figure.

I've been trying to think of examples but I especially love horns in reggae. I also love what the Tower of Power horn section brought to Little Feat's Waiting For Columbus album.

The horns in Chicago's early stuff were pretty damn powerful as well.
