Do you doubt for one second that it'll be a permanent opener on this tour? He stuck to his guns for "On the Road Again." Only switched it up once from April through September that year.SchoolGirlHeart wrote:Tour Stop #2: Summertime Blues leads off... Hmmm...

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Pinot Noir in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and screaming "WOO HOO"

Re: Summertime Blues v. Glory Days v. Tripping Billies
I thought last nights show was a lot better. The 5 o'clock and get drunk screw medley was cool and much better encores. I don't mind summertime blues as I always enjoyed the Alan Jackson version. Opening for a show? Probably not. Maybe he will change it, it seemed quiet until brown eyed girl hit. Jimmy is usually pretty good about knowing what is working and what is not. I think it was two years ago he dropped Mermaid Of The a Night - which I thought was great live. You know it's interesting because we long time phans get frustrated with song choice but songs like 5 o clock and knee deep are all relevant now and it is what the majority of people want to hear. I think he should change the intro of the show every town and obviously the encores.
Fins up!
Fins up!

If only. We asked Mac about that in Linden and he said there were some licensing issues with that song...txaggirl91 wrote:My dream is Thursday and Saturday night the song will be replaced with "Hello Texas"
You would think that by now Jimmy would find a way to sort them out.

Jimmy have some licensing issues with God's Own Drunk as well if I remember correctly. He managed to get that sorted out.Dezdmona wrote:If only. The thing with Buffett, is that he's been covering other people's material for nearly as long as he's been recording albums going back to "Ballad of Spider John", "Defying Gravity", "Making Music For Money", "Stories We Could Tell", "This Hotel Room", "Banana Republics", "Lovely Cruise", "Biloxi", etc. from some of his early records in the 70's. Oftentimes, folks don't realize they're covers as back then he had a real knack for making other artists' material his own. Unfortunately, that hasn't been the case with some of his more recent cover versions (such as the ones mentioned in this thread).

Re: Summertime Blues v. Glory Days v. Tripping Billies
I find it a little disappointing that he makes other people's hits his own to the degree that they become guarantees in the setlist. Brown Eyed Girl was great for a tour and to pull out once in a while, but it's not his song and nobody thinks it is. I love Southern Cross, but most people don't think of Jimmy when they hear it. It's Five O'Clock Somewhere is an Alan Jackson song.Tiki Torches wrote:The thing with Buffett, is that he's been covering other people's material for nearly as long as he's been recording albums going back to "Ballad of Spider John", "Defying Gravity", "Making Music For Money", "Stories We Could Tell", "This Hotel Room", "Banana Republics", "Lovely Cruise", "Biloxi", etc. from some of his early records in the 70's. I'm A-OK with him picking a cover like Summertime Blues and playing it every night for a tour. It gets old to us, but 99% of the fans at the end of summer shows don't even know it's coming. So if he's going to pick a good, new cover, play it good for the whole summer and then put it away.
This year, with the extra Alan Jackson and Zac Brown songs, it seems like he is prepping himself for a climactic Labor Day weekend show in Hershey full of duets and appearances in each others' sets.

Re: Summertime Blues v. Glory Days v. Tripping Billies
Well said. I find it particularly odd that for an artist that recently released an album of new material that he has a tendency to rely so heavily on songs by other artists instead. That doesn't speak too highly of his confidence level in his new work. It's also telling that the only song that he performs from Songs From St. Somewhere with any consistency is "Too Drunk To Karaoke", a tune he's openly admitted to not being fond of. It's like a dumbed down version of Buffett by the numbers for the masses. No, thanks.FunkHouse9 wrote:I find it a little disappointing that he makes other people's hits his own to the degree that they become guarantees in the setlist. Whenever an artist tours without an album to promote, I go into it with the hope that they'll take that opportunity to dig deeper into their catalog, which they often do. Jimmy doesn't ever really go down that path.Tiki Torches wrote:Well said. Which is a crying shame, especially when he has such a vast catalog to draw upon. It's also not like the Coral Reefer Band isn't experienced or competent enough to be able perform a different setlist every night. It doesn't have to be completely different, just different enough to make it worth everyone's while. Meaning, those that attend multiple shows or listeners that tune into Radio Margaritaville (and now, Margaritaville TV) on a regular basis. I know in the case of a band like the Grateful Dead, switching up the setlist on a nightly basis was just as much of a thrill for the band as it was for their audience as it kept them on their toes. Unfortunately, Buffett would prefer to coast.FunkHouse9 wrote:Whenever an artist tours without an album to promote, I go into it with the hope that they'll take that opportunity to dig deeper into their catalog, which they often do. If we could break down why people still go to Jimmy Buffett concerts into some sort of easy to read pie graph (insert joke here) I wonder what it would look like. Percentage of people who primarily go because:Tiki Torches wrote:Which is a crying shame, especially when he has such a vast catalog to draw upon. 1. They always have so why stop?
2. People who rarely go but say, "Hey, lets go so we can hear some of those old folk songs from the Keys we love so much"
3. The party.
4. Summer ritual.
5. To hear new songs off a new album.
6. To see what cover songs he plays.
7. Margaritaville is, like, my jam, Man!
8. " Jimmy is a beach bum just like me so lets hang with him for a night!"
Wonder which of those would be tops? Bottom?
the hit and run is as good as any religion around this time of year . . .

Re: Summertime Blues v. Glory Days v. Tripping Billies
It is a bit amusing that the bitterness gets held onto for so long and so strong. Summertime Blues is at least currently being played on tour. Glory Days overstayed its welcome by making a handful of appearances each year for a few years, but aside from only two appearances in 2011, it hasn't otherwise been played in going on 6 years. BUT, Tripping Billies was played only 6 times almost 10 years ago. Clearly he will NEVER live that one down.
