Thank you, FinsUp, for coming up with the exact words that I was wracking my brain to try to find.FinsUp6835 wrote:Tiki when you respond you make my stomach turn. People want to lynch you on here because you just speak with such arrogance.
Who cares if he wrote Math sux?! Artist tend to cut terrible songs. And one mans garbage is another mans treasure. That song reminds me of me hanging out with my brother. Is it the best song? No, of course not. Get over yourself and get a hobby man.
Again, no arrogance involved. I was stating the fact that Buffet didn't coin the term "Landshark", it originated on a Saturday Night Live sketch back in 1975.Bicycle Bill wrote:Thank you, FinsUp, for coming up with the exact words that I was wracking my brain to try to find.FinsUp6835 wrote:Tiki when you respond you make my stomach turn. Like FinsUp said, we get it. We got it the first dozen times you said it in this thread. In fact, I'm surprised you didn't post a YouTube link to the clip in question just to further prove your point and reinforce your self-awarded title as the "Ultimate Arbiter of All Things Buffett".Tiki Torches wrote:Again, no arrogance involved. Never would have had to repeat it if the Kool Aid drinker would have acknowledged it to start with but he chose not to.Bicycle Bill wrote:Like FinsUp said, we get it. We got it the first dozen times you said it in this thread.
That's a severely misguided designation you may have but it was never my point at all. As for a YouTube clip, I definitely would have posted one but the SNL folks are pretty diligent about keeping copyrighted material off of YouTube. However, if you would like to see it, click here. If you have even the slightest sense of humor at all, be prepared to laugh your a$$ off.Bicycle Bill wrote:In fact, I'm surprised you didn't post a YouTube link to the clip in question just to further prove your point and reinforce your self-awarded title as the "Ultimate Arbiter of All Things Buffet".
Not a chance. Their usage of it dates back to 2008. The actual origin of it is 1975.STL Parrot wrote:And I thought Ole Miss coined the term "Landshark"![]()

Is it margaritaville kool aid? Cause then I won't drink it.Tiki Torches wrote:Never would have had to repeat it if the Kool Aid drinker would have acknowledged it to start with but he chose not to.Bicycle Bill wrote:Like FinsUp said, we get it. It was "Kool Aid drinker" but "kook aid" works too.FinsUp6835 wrote:And why am I a kook aid drinker? Because I choose to be positive and look on the bright side of things?
This represents an opinion, your opinion, Tiki. To say other Parrotheads "lap up", defines arrogance in a very blatant way. I love Math Sux, Earls Dead, and Too Drunk To Karaoke. I'll "Lap Up", whatever, In My Opinion, I want to from Mr. Buffett, regardless of your, or anyone else's opinion of that music. These songs are just as freaking awesome as any other Buffett tunes, again in my opinion.Tiki Torches wrote:No "arrogance" here, just stating an opinion.FinsUp6835 wrote:Tiki when you respond you make my stomach turn. Except "Math Suks" is indicative of much of the subpar material he proceeded to churn out out in the latter stages of his career which some Parrotheads proceeded to lap up as though it was some of his finest work. It's just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to some of the utter sh*t that's made it onto some of his albums over the years.FinsUp6835 wrote:Who cares if he wrote Math sux?! Somehow, I figured you wouldn't be able to actually answer the question. So, you would be ok with someone taking credit for one of your original ideas and profiting from it? That's disconcerting to know.FinsUp6835 wrote:It only matters to you Tiki.
No one else cares. Get a life
Those are definitely opinions, no argument there. Even Buffett has been quoted as saying "Too Drunk To Karaoke" isn't his best work. What I have a hard time understanding is why someone would knowingly put such a sh*tty song on their record and actually own up to the fact that it's subpar material. It would stand to reason that he knows his audience well enough to know they will indeed "lap it up" and in so doing, it would become a staple of his live sets. Meanwhile, much more worthier songs continue to be excluded. Taking that approach is also pandering. Same for choosing to make his sets top heavy with covers. An actual artist that is true to their muse would never stoop to such levels. Unfortunately, Buffett has and has been doing so for years now. It's a travesty to be witness to.RIPH wrote:This represents an opinion, your opinion, Tiki. To say other Parrotheads "lap up", defines arrogance in a very blatant way. And it was (and still is) one of the funniest sketches from SNL.Tiki Torches wrote:Not a chance. Their usage of it dates back to 2008. The actual origin of it is 1975.STL Parrot wrote:And I thought Ole Miss coined the term "Landshark"![]()

Agreed. Though SNL is pretty vigilant about keeping clips off of YouTube, it does appear in this compilation. I'm guessing it's not been removed because this appears to be from an officially sanctioned uploader (WatchMojo.com). Still, I'm not sure how Chris Farley's "Living In A Van Down By the River" sketch didn't make the cut.STL Parrot wrote:And it was (and still is) one of the funniest sketches from SNL.Tiki Torches wrote:Not a chance. If this is only about copyrighting the name "Coral Reefer" so others don't use it, I'm fine with it. However, if this is about JB launching into the e-cigarette and tobacco industry, I'm appalled by the shameless commercialism. I'm of the school that says the music should be about the music, and, if this is another money grab by JB, it cheapens the music and the name/integrity of the band.surfpirate wrote:If Margaritaville doesn't file this type of trademark protection for the words "coral reefer" then the term isn't .... protected.
And someone else will use those words in association with e-cigs, hookahs, etc. etc.
Larry, thank you for capturing perfectly why I, as a 30-year Buffett fan, feel disillusioned.LIPH wrote:In my opinion, that's not even close to being true. The Jimmy Buffett I became a fan of many years ago was a musician who later had some business interests on the side. The one out there now is a businessman who dabbles in music. It obviously worked out pretty well for his investment portfolio but, again, in my opinion, the music has suffered.FinsUp6835 wrote:Even with all the business, commercialism - jimmy is still the tequila drinking pot smoking folk singer.
As LIPH noted above, and I agreed with, I think he's already crossed that line into commercialism with the branding to date; but to license these kind of products just seems way over the line to me.capnbobby wrote:If this is only about copyrighting the name "Coral Reefer" so others don't use it, I'm fine with it.
