In my opinion, that's not even close to being true. The Jimmy Buffett I became a fan of many years ago was a musician who later had some business interests on the side. The one out there now is a businessman who dabbles in music. It obviously worked out pretty well for his investment portfolio but, again, in my opinion, the music has suffered.
Larry, thank you for capturing perfectly why I, as a 30-year Buffett fan, feel disillusioned.
Maybe I saw this day coming but my disillusionment set in years ago. I've never faulted him for starting a business to fall back on in case the hits stopped coming (Buffett's own words) but in the years since, his business ventures have overshadowed his musical side and in a very big way, have detracted from it. Though I love work from all his many eras (including the present), give me the early Buffett over the one that's been corrupted by his various business ventures any day.

I still think deep down he still is. If he wasn't he woulda quit touring years ago and stopped popping in to small clubs n playing. But he loves it. Maybe that's just the romantic in me.

I have no doubt Buffett loves performing but it's become increasingly evident that his business interests prevail and in so doing, it's detracted from what originally drew many of us to Buffett to start with, which was the music. It's as though the tables have been turned and he's become the very symbol of evil corporate greed that he used to rail against.

You hit it, Tiki. There is a moment in Hoot--the movie--when the two boys see a sign on the sand dunes for a new development that is coming, and they look at each other and shake their heads. Unfortunately, Buffett has become that developer. I find the hypocrisy of that unpalatable.

I came to grips with it a while ago, and I think that realization is why I typically don't get all out of whack about it anymore. I pick and choose the increasingly fewer songs that I like off the new stuff and blend it in with the old stuff that I still like. The concerts are still fun when I go, especially the tailgating, and I've got my mixes/playlists that take me back to his heyday. At the end of the day, to me it's all about the music I like, and where it takes me.

That's only assuming that all commercialism and corporations are evil.
I don't think they are

When Buffett's business ventures begin to overshadow his musical interests and actually take precedence over them, then it's a problem. The lengthy laundry list of terms listed earlier in this thread is a prime example of corporate greed taking precedence. That may be something you're ok with, some of us are not. As I stated earlier, I can understand protecting your own financial interests but to quote the man himself, this is "overkill".

. . consider this . . . and it's just my opinion, no less, no more weighty than anyone else . .
. . I truly believe Jimmy doesn't really care about all this hoop-la . . . I think he has a bunch of "suits" focusing on branding, acquiring, empire building , money making etc. etc.. . .
. . while I'm sure he has the final say in all matters of $$$, I see him waving off everyone and saying " y'all figure it out, I'm going surfing . . " . . .
. . when he hits the stage, you can see that he truly enjoys it . . . even when a pocket of $$, turned into a bucket of $$$$, which turned into boatloads of $$$$$$ . . . he still sports a T-shirt, shorts and bare feet . . that's the real Jimmy I see . .
. . bottom line . . . I don't think Jimmy has sold out, he just perhaps outgrew his own self . . .
. . any of this make sense . . . ? ?

He keeps up the image and is still living the life, but neither is at 100%. There's plenty of businessmen who are making themselves rich off of managing his empire, but he's still at the wheel.

What BG said! I doubt that JB spends much time with the business stuff.... he's has "his people" work on that stuff.
I think he still enjoys performing and as long as he does, he will.

Can we please manage to give opinions without a side of snarky and an extra dollop of personal attacks?
And avoid the need to have the last word by simply restating and repeating ourselves?
Respect each other people, Or by damb golly I swear I will come back and start writing about this in comic strip form. You have been warned.
