. Clueless in Technoville .

Post by balcony girls »

. . It is safe to say a 3rd grader is more techno savvy than I am . . . I quit trying to catch up to today's cyber-world a long time ago . .

. . I thought I would toss my questions out to y'all . . . might someone help me, please . . ? ?

. . issues :

. . 1 . . I want to watch/listen to things I pull up on my laptop (concert, talk radio shows,DVDs,etc ) thru my TV . .

. . 2 . . I also don't hear well, so I use headphones (vs earbuds ) attached to my laptop . . to reduce the sound sharing with my neighbors . .

. . is there a solution to my being wired/tied to my laptop that allows me to hear, see and still make a run to the kitchen without disconnecting . .? ?

. . sigh . . :(

. . p.s . . . I've heard y'all talk about things that will show laptop to TV, and possibly wireless headphones . .

. . but the more I try to self-educate myself, the more confused I get . .

. . I'm willing to pay ( I've looked thru the Bose website . . ) . . but I get overwhelmed because I honestly still remain " clueless in Technoville. .

. . help . .

Keet sets my stuff up for me.

But yeah, wireless headphones, you can get them anywhere from $30 cheapies to more than $300. And if you have Google Chromecast you can access the video and then send it to your TV.

If you don't have someone techie near you can you go to Best Buy and tell the guys what you are trying to do, they will help you pick out the right stuff. I always find them really helpful.

. . yep . . I need a hands on/in house demonstration . .

I think they will send the Geek Squad to help with that, not sure how much it costs for that.

Okay.... few thoughts that might help.

First... to make this work, you pretty much have to have a newer TV with an HDMI port. Looks like this.

Next... you can watch YouTube videos and most stuff that your web-browswer (Chrome) displays by using a Chromecast. They're $35 from Amazon. BUT.... to my knowledge, YOU CANNOT CHROMECAST MARGARITAVILLE.TV (at least I couldn't get it to work.)

http://www.amazon.com/Google-Chromecast ... chromecast

One more good option that will let you see ANYTHING on the internet is a "stick" Android computer. It's basically a computer-on-a-stick that plugs into that same HDMI port on your TV. You would use a wireless keyboard and your TV would become the computer monitor.

http://www.amazon.com/QQ-Tech%C2%AE-Wir ... h+keyboard

Hope that helps. Please know, however, that some setup is definitely required. Might want to have your resident 5th grader around to help with the techie bits.

Good luck!

I have a Chromecast and like it a lot. I use it for streaming YouTube and videos on my hard drive to my TV. You can't beat it for $35 or less.

ANYTHING you can open in the Chrome browser on a computer can be sent to your Chromecast. YouTube, Netflix, p*rn, anything. There's a simple add-on that puts a button at the top of the browser, you click it and it sends the window to your TV. That's that.

If you have a Chromecast and you're using a tablet, Android or Apple (or perhaps other), it changes things a bit. Chromecast will require app compatibility to be able to send the video to the Chromecast. YouTube will do that. Speaking specifically of Margaritaville TV, the one concert I watched early on used an unlisted YouTube channel for the live stream, so that definitely would have worked. I have seen things that lead me to believe they don't always use a YouTube stream, if at all anymore. If not, using the Chrome browser on a laptop would still serve the purpose to get the video from your laptop to your TV.

As for audio, it really depends on how far your kitchen is away from your laptop/TV. If it's in the next room, I'd get a bluetooth headphone setup. If it's farther, some other option may be better.

Bose is going to be overkill, especially if you're hard of hearing. Personally I think they're overpriced even if you're not. Whatever they have to offer will be available from another company at an acceptable quality level for less money. Unless you're an audiophile, it's overboard. If you are an audiophile, you're probably not considering Bose. Their day seems to have passed.

Be careful trying to lure those pesky 3rd graders with Popsicles and Cheetos. Gonna be hard to explain that one to the judge.

I used Chromecast (from my laptop) just this past weekend to watch Jimmy's concert on Margaritaville.tv and it worked great!

Hmmmm..... my bad. I stand corrected.

Guess I was assuming (I know, bad idea) that since I couldn't Chromecast the concert from my tablet, that it wouldn't work from a laptop.

Apologies and thanks for the educational moment. :D

A new one costs $35 although I have seen them discounted a little bit. I just saw that Groupon Goods has a refurbished Chromecast for $25. Doesn't say how long the deal is good for. At this price, I just bought a second one for my bedroom TV.

Your tv is fairly old... I highly doubt that it has an HDMI port. This is where you really need to start. Look all around the edges and on the back and front... if you can't find a 1/2" or so wide thing labeled HDMI, it sounds to me from reading the replies, you will need a new tv too.
