JB Discography End-To-End

Post by FunkHouse9 »

I realized lately that despite being a big Buffett fan, there is quite a bit of his catalog I've actually never heard. So, I have decided to embark on a quest to listen through his catalog, in order, from end to end. I'm sure there will be a few unknown-to-me gems I'll pick up along the way. Sticking with the commercial releases, but depending on how much patience I have left at the end, I may dig deeper into the rarities on the FTP site. But, at this point, I am concerned about having the patience to sit through all of the live

Has anyone else done anything similar?

I've started listening to the albums in your "Albums" link from oldest to newest. My plan is to skip best-of's and the box set except for re-recorded or new tracks. I suspect albums 10-16 in that link will be trying on my patience.

If I'm not sick of it all at the end, I may work my way through the FTP collections like this one. http://buffett.jokelben.us/Treasure%20Box/

I own every album and then some in my collection and have listened to everyone of them, although not in a consecutive listen. Aside from all of the song released by Jimmy on his own albums he has also released songs for other artists albums and several movie soundtracks as well. Not to mention the various songs he as only performed live. I would include Jimmy's first three live albums, "You Had to Be There, Feeding Frenzy, and Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays because there are tracks released on all three of those that do not have studio recorded counterparts

I've listened to everything, but not in chronological order. I have a playlist in my iTunes library of just Buffett music - studio albums, live albums, cover songs, unreleased recordings, stuff he's recorded on other peoples' records (for instance, the studio version of All Night Long w/Lionel Richie) - and it's sorted alphabetically by album title.

Oops... I read "listen", as "list". I thought you were making a list of his discography end to end! Never mind!

To answer your question, that is something that I have not done, but it sounds like an interesting and entertaining quest!!

Somewhere along this discography journey
You will likely stumble upon an
early live version or two of Margaritaville without the cursed
"Salt! Salt! Salt!" chant.
Take a moment to soak that joy in completely,
because you will encounter the horrid current version in wretched
back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back "Live In (insert venue)" recordings later on.

You have been warned.

I plan on savoring every moment of "You Had To Be There." That title is so appropriate because I wasn't at that show, but I feel like I was in the crowd for every single one of the other live albums.

The day after the Bar exam (July 2000) I embarked on this very same mission. I planned to do it with a case of Bud Bottles and started around 8:30 a.m. I got through the first 3 albums (not including D2E or HCJ) and ended up being too tired from the night before.

Something that I did for a while after I really got into the music was I bought 1 album per year and only 1 album. That kept me always knowing there was something new on the horizon. Now, on my birthday I listen to the album he came out with when he was the same age.

It's going slow since I only play the albums at times when I feel like I can somewhat listen. But, I'm up through You Had To Be There and so far so good. Quite a few songs I'm sure I've never heard before including, to my surprise, the studio version of God's Own Drunk.

Does that mean up until now you have never listened to the full album of living and dying in 3/4 time.... :/

Apparently so. I have owned the album for along time. But, I have bought many, many albums that I've never listened to all the way through.

3/4 was released before I was born. I became a Buffett fan 20 years or so ago and my first Buffett concert was 15 years ago. It took me a while to get past the Yellow Album. By that point I had quite a catalog to get caught up on.

With illness at home and business at work over the past couple of weeks, this little endeavor hasn't progressed as quickly as I had hoped. The good news is that the next album in queue will be the first of his albums released after I was born. So, I'm getting there. I'm trying to really do this right, so if I get sidetracked while it's playing, I try to go back a re-listen to tracks before I move on to the next album.
