Apparently, the universe.
Ended up in the ER on Sunday starring in an episode of When Kidney Stones Attack.
When you only have one functioning kidney, having a stone interfering with that function is a bad thing.
Long story short, had to have an emergency procedure to remove the stone and place a stent inside the ureter.
Came home yesterday morning but still kinda sore and irritated in certain places.

Believe it or not, the left kidney was rendered non-functional by ...... a kidney stone. One which I never realized was there. That issue was discovered by accident almost 6 years ago when I was having other tests done. Apparently the stone got lodged just outside the kidney (without causing me any noticeable distress) and blocked the passage of urine. Eventually the kidney shut down. Permanently.

Make that hug a gentle one. :D

My attempts to get a refund, rebate or recall were all rejected. [smilie=cheeky-grin.gif]

Hug the hand? That might work ..... but don't be surprised if the hand falls off. Or explodes.

Normal?

The stent is supposed to be in for about 2 weeks. Originally the stone was lodged just outside the kidney so the stent (which runs inside the ureter from the kidney to the bladder) was going to bypass the stone to make sure the kidney was draining properly. They didn't want to mess with the stone right away because it was too high up but would perform a 2nd procedure after a few weeks to remove the stone and the stent. However, by the time I got to the OR (about 5 hours after I arrived at the ER), the stone had migrated down thru the ureter and was just above the bladder. Since it was so much closer the doc decided to take it out (he said it would NOT have passed thru on it's own). The stent was put in anyway just to ensure proper "flow" and to hopefully stretch the ureter a bit.

Didn't even enter (as this past weekend proved, long term planning for me is always subject to disaster).

But, on the plus side, that makes your chances better. So good luck to you!

And the pain part is minor at this point (compared to Sunday when it was excruciating). The stent isn't really that noticeable. Just a little minor irritation. Although I'm guessing the removal process might not be a picnic in the park. :o
