going to grad school?

Just curious.... anybody else out there going back to graduate school?

In my line of work (education) you're more or less required to go back and get additional degrees. I'm now working on my fourth (and last) degree. It's a grind some times, but should be worth it in the end (right?)

So far this fall, It's been a 5 page APA style paper due every week and now I've got a 15-20 page review of literature (also APA style) due on Monday. Don't mean to whine, but it's a load for the moment.

Anyway... just thought I'd take a minute and check in with my friends and see if anybody else is having a similar experience. If you are, hang in there. I"ll do the same.

Thanks for the time you took to read this. That is all.

I'll never spend another day in a classroom, but when I was 39 years old I quit my job (I was the credit manager at Chase Auto Finance) and went to law school. It was the worst 3 years of my life.

Okay.... somewhat similar situation here, kind of, I guess.

I'm starting a doctoral thing at 45. Good news is that I should be done by Christmas 2016, so it's not THAT long-term, and so far it's not been bad. Just had one of those weeks where all the assignments were due and life got a little hectic. Got it all done, though, and moving on. 8) Thanks for the reply.

I have toyed with the idea but just can't commit. Have a masters in social work and also work in education. Thought about getting my special ed specialist but I just don't want to add more on top of what I am currently doing. Between all the paperwork I have to do now after hours and parenting two almost teenagers I just don't think I could manage more grad work. I also teach adjunct at a local university. I have debated going on for PhD to teach full time. Again, the commitment scares me. I just don't want to live in the world of writing papers and sitting in classes.

Kudos to you for doing it. I am sure you will enjoy the end result.

Hey, just an FYI..... the program I finally ended up with is fairly cost-effective and it's mostly online. The online part lets me avoid driving a lot and sitting in classrooms. Instead, the students are all online at the same time and can actually do small-group discussions electronically. And no, it's not one of the for-profit deals you see on TV (you can fill in those names yourself.) This one is from a college started back in the 1880s and is accredited. PM me if you want more info.

Good luck!

I've got a Ph.D in education so if you need any encouragement, let me know. I always ask someone who is pursing the doc degree why they want it?

Hey, thanks txaggirl, for the encouragement. Pretty cool to know others here have already done this kind of thing. My doctorate will be in education, too.

Why the doctorate, you ask? I've got several years left in my current situation before retirement, but I'll still be in my 50s when I hit the "full service" mark. So, getting the doctorate is an attempt to set up the next phase. I'm already teaching some college courses as an adjunct. Hopefully, that experience, combined with a doctorate will open up some opportunities for a gig in higher education.

So.... to you.... same question... why the doctorate?

I did it to go the higher ed route. Put the work in, finished. did the faculty thing for a few years. loved the teaching and service, hated the research. now I'm using my doc degree in other ways. worked at a university system, learned a lot about state politics. now I'm back in public ed working at the district level, making WAY more than I ever did in higher ed. I'm still and adjunct at the local university so it keeps my chops in that world.
