Re: Good thoughts for Barry
So this is what I posted on Facebook and am posting here as well to cover those not there.
"So I have been asked to update my status with everyone. First I want to thank you all for the well wishes, cards and gifts. I knew I was not in perfect health but never thought I would have heart bypass surgery. I eat healthy because of the diabetes, get lots of exercise at work, which I was told is probably what saved me from a classic "Fred Sanford". My heart was still pumping well, 55% EF, but had so much blockage it was just a matter of time. I still find it funny the Dr. kept saying get some rest. I finally asked her how as I never had more than 4 hours without someone coming in and doing something to me, it actually got better after that because she asked the different people to work together on timing so I might have three different people come in together. This way I could actually get some sleep and not 30 minutes at a time. I had the best nurses in ICU. I remember waking up after surgery and seeing them looking over me then I went back to sleep. Later they pulled the breathing tube out as it was starting to activate my gag reflex. I have never known such pain, cutting the sternum is not fun. Oxycodone pills and morphine injections got me through. Things are getting better but each day is a new odd feeling. One odd feeling is my chest hairs are growing back in from being shaved. They are at odd angles along the scar and poke through my shirt while I sleep causing irritation. I wonder as I lay flat on my back, so my left leg can be elevated, if my breathing is correct, is my heart beating right, is my scar healing proper? I am still not back to daily showers as it is a bit more dangerous than it was. My leg is feeling better from the vein removal but is still a bother. Some mornings I can swing my legs off the bed stand up and walk. There are also the mornings where the first bit of weight put on that leg and subsequent steps hurt badly. It feels as if my leg has shrunk on one side. I was eating more in the hospital than I am at home but am getting much more sleep. I can crave something to eat then not really like the taste when I get it. As of this morning I was down to 162 lbs. I will have 6 weeks of rehab to help strengthen my muscles and need to make final plans for my travel time in August. Feeling older right now, but fear not good citizens, BATMAN will be back! Love to you all, any questions just ask. Perhaps I can help someone else through my ordeal."
