Hey Jimmy - Wanna Buy the CUBS?!

Post by lati2d »

I just read that Tribune Co.- owner of the Chicago Cubs - has announced it plans to sell the team after the 2007 season. Being a diehard Red Sox fan - i could care less about the Cubs - BUT a certain person - Jimmy Buffett is a huge Cubs fan - right? So I wonder if Jimmy would be interested? I read the sale " could fetch $600 million or more".
It would be an expensive hobby!!

Hahaha! You know what is funny? Is ESPN radio was talking about that EXACT thing this morning...saying that he would be a fun owner, and with how long he has been a cub fan...

way more than they are worth, especially with what they spent in the off-season.

I could see Jimmy being a silent partner, but not full-on ownership. He's got enough on his plate without having to deal with the day-to-day issues of team ownership. Besides, he's already got a summer job. 8)

If they don't win this year, or at least make the playoffs with the money they spent, there is no owner in the world that could remain "silent".

Jimmy would be a horrible owner for the Cubs. Sure he is a fan of the sport, but Jimmy is no Mark Cuban. I do not see Jimmy spending big money for players. Hell the guy doesn't wanna keep a few of the reefers in the band cause its probably costing him too much.

Conflicting reports now on what is going on. MLB says Sam Zell bought the Tribune & will sell the Cubs:

http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd ... p&c_id=mlb

And our ESPN ticker scroll thingy says Sam Zell bought the Cubs.

So maybe Ellen or somebody else in Chicagoland can sort it all out for us. [smilie=hammerit.gif]

Today before the cubs game on the radio-- they said no deal with the cubs will be complete til the END of the season when we have the world series parade through Chicago.

And JB said that "when the Cubs finally do win the world series, we shall return"..

Neither one's gonna happen... :-?

The Cubs will be sold, with the deal not to be finalized until after the end of the season. Zell is buying the Tribune, and the Trib does own the Cubs, but he is selling them (oh for the days when I was a stockholder, and had a voice-albeit a 1/10,000 voice)

And Matt, I find the idea of Mark Cuban buying them a really interesting one-sure would be entertaining!

Wrigleyville could become his Branson, MO. Just kick back in one place, and let the fans come to you. Concerts every weekend the Cubs are on the road!

The folks in Wrigleyville would not want concerts every weekend. But it that is a great idea. Maybe he could move them to the Keys while we are dreaming.

There also is no clear idea what will happen to Wrigley Field-whether the ballpark will be sold along with the team, or not.
