They can give their money, but the limits are capped. By performing at a fundraiser, they can have many more people donating that might not have done so normally. The end result for the candidate will be a lot more dollars, but the end result for the performer might be lost fans. It's a chance they take, but I think most separate politics & entertainment.C-Dawg wrote:that's one show I'm happy to miss....celebrities using their celebrity to help form other's opinion.....they disgust me. If they want to support their candidate, give money like anyone else.
I was cool with Jimmy playing Clinton's inauguration...but this....Jimmy has lost some of my respect....![]()

Three points,
1. This isn't the first time that Jimmy has performed at a campaign rally. This seems to happen every four years or so when national politics are in the spotlight.
2. Hey, I'd love to have the opportunity to play a concert at an amphitheater for Barack Obama, but somehow I don't think I'm quite the same draw as Jimmy is. He still doesn't preach his politics at concerts which I think most parrotheads, Republican or Democrat, are thankful for. As far as I'm concerned, as long as this wasn't a scheduled tour stop, it's okay. It's not like he's been scheduled to play Tampa for months as part of the Year of Still Here Tour, and at the last minute they're turning it into an Obama fundraiser.
3. Before anyone blast Jimmy as a bleeding heart liberal, isn't he also a supporter of Charlie Crist (sp?), who was considered a front-runner for a while for McCain's VP slot?

Sometimes more than others,
we see who and what and where we are,
I'm just a one man band,
With my feet in the sand,
Tonight I just need my guitar

Last thought, how is a celebrity using their celebrity status to influence the votes of others different than say a newspaper using their status as an institution that reaches numerous voters to endorse a candidate and influence the votes of others?

We're trying to make this one the "upbeat" political thread.ScarletB wrote:lati2d wrote:The best kind...LIPH wrote:left wingsz-man wrote:wonder what's on the menu?phjim wrote:From an article at ABC Action News: "<a href="http://www.abcactionnews.com/news/local ... 69">Barack & Buffet in Tampa?</a>"I guess THIS is the "happy JB agrees with me" thread as opposed to the other one in the Discussion section

Newspapers and media in general are just as bad....I'd love to find a news site and/or newpaper that gave unbiased "just the facts" news rather than the spin that their Editors or owners want. As it is, I read the same articles from multiple sites with different "perspectives" just to figure out what the truth is. Sadly most people don't.jonesbeach10 wrote:Last thought, how is a celebrity using their celebrity status to influence the votes of others different than say a newspaper using their status as an institution that reaches numerous voters to endorse a candidate and influence the votes of others?
Hey, there are some people who get their views on issues from Jon Stewart
