Post by phjim » October 27, 2008 5:36 pm

From an article at ABC Action News: "Barack & Buffett in Tampa?"
http://www.abcactionnews.com/news/local ... be068d0b69

ABC Action News.com has learned Barack Obama is planning a last minute visit to Tampa, days before the Presidential election. Obama is expected to appear with superstar musician Jimmy Buffett.

It is another sign of Tampa Bay's importance to the Presidential race. Obama's scheduled visit comes just two days before election day.

A Tampa spokeswoman for the Obama campaign said she has not been informed of the visit. However, according to an email obtained by abcactionnews.com, employees at the Ford Amphitheatre have been told to prepare for the visit this coming Sunday, November 2nd.

From the original e-mail: "Hello every one I just wanted to give you a heads up there has been a new event added to the schedule at the Ampitheater, It will be on November 2nd It is the Barack Obama rally with Jimmy Buffett performing not sure of all the details just yet. But we wanted to get an e-mail out to start recruiting employees, Their are over 15,000 tickets reserved and expecting another 5,000- 7,000."

Jimmy Buffett is a Democrat?!?!? That's it, I'm never spending a cent on the man ever again!

Sometimes more than others,
we see who and what and where we are,
I'm just a one man band,
With my feet in the sand,
Tonight I just need my guitar

I knew it! WOW! Usually it is a much smaller venue. I am so pyched!

And if Les thinks he is going with me he is SO mistaken!!!! I have taken so much crap for supporting Obama...... this is MY reward, not his.

that's one show I'm happy to miss....celebrities using their celebrity to help form other's opinion.....they disgust me. If they want to support their candidate, give money like anyone else.
I was cool with Jimmy playing Clinton's inauguration...but this....Jimmy has lost some of my respect.... [smilie=thumbdown.gif] [smilie=sadlook.gif] [smilie=sadlook.gif]

They can give their money, but the limits are capped. By performing at a fundraiser, they can have many more people donating that might not have done so normally. The end result for the candidate will be a lot more dollars, but the end result for the performer might be lost fans. It's a chance they take, but I think most separate politics & entertainment.

Three points,
1. This isn't the first time that Jimmy has performed at a campaign rally. This seems to happen every four years or so when national politics are in the spotlight.

2. Hey, I'd love to have the opportunity to play a concert at an amphitheater for Barack Obama, but somehow I don't think I'm quite the same draw as Jimmy is. He still doesn't preach his politics at concerts which I think most parrotheads, Republican or Democrat, are thankful for. As far as I'm concerned, as long as this wasn't a scheduled tour stop, it's okay. It's not like he's been scheduled to play Tampa for months as part of the Year of Still Here Tour, and at the last minute they're turning it into an Obama fundraiser.

3. Before anyone blast Jimmy as a bleeding heart liberal, isn't he also a supporter of Charlie Crist (sp?), who was considered a front-runner for a while for McCain's VP slot?

Last thought, how is a celebrity using their celebrity status to influence the votes of others different than say a newspaper using their status as an institution that reaches numerous voters to endorse a candidate and influence the votes of others?

We're trying to make this one the "upbeat" political thread. The way I see it Jimmy has as much right to support his candidate as any of us do. There are tons of people in here using this forum to present our views.....from all sides. Why should we be able to use a public forum to try to convince people who is the right man for the job and think that he should not be able to do the same?

Newspapers and media in general are just as bad....I'd love to find a news site and/or newpaper that gave unbiased "just the facts" news rather than the spin that their Editors or owners want. As it is, I read the same articles from multiple sites with different "perspectives" just to figure out what the truth is. Sadly most people don't.
