Catching up on books I didn't have time to read while I was working.

The Weight of Water by Anita Shreve.

I had Vince Flynn's EXTREME MEASURES in my hand today and didn't buy it... I have too much to do this weekend and I know perfectly well once I have that book absolutely nothing will get done until I finish reading it.... :P

The first part is really sloppy ... don't know where the editor was ... as the plot develops, the writing tightens up ... I loved it ... Mitch and Mike are right on target, so to speak, and as usual, they know more than the beltway boys and girls.

Can't give it 5 stars because the first 1/3 is written so poorly, but will give it 4 stars because of the way Flynn got back on course.

Baldacci's DIVINE JUSTICE is right up there with THE CAMEL CLUB ... the book picks up right after Oliver Stone a/k/a John Carr kills two really bad guys in the Washington power cartel ... he hops a train out of town, ends up in Divine, VA, which is anything but heaven on earth. Loved it.

This is off the subject ... but has anyone heard of a girl singer named Melody Gardot? I heard title cut from WORRISOME HEART while I was writing something the other day at work (I listen to smooth jazz to drown out the office sounds). I had to stop what I was doing and listen ... she's a cross between Eva Cassidy and Diana Krall, with just a hint of Ella thrown in for good measure. If you like smoldering jazz, check her out. I'm trying to work out an interview with her. When she was 19, she was bicycling and was hit by a car. Left her with brain damage, but doctors played music for her and it helped her recovery. She's still sensitive to sound and light and has to sit in a special chair, but none of that matters when she opens her mouth ... I think she's from Philly ... and she's 24 now ... still very young to sound this good and so comfortable in the genre.

Glad to hear it. I'd read some less-than-stellar reviews about the plot, so good to know you liked it!

Never heard of Melody Gardot but will have to check it out.

SGH: The plot kinda wanders for a while ... but, he does bring it together. It's pretty much against today's environment re: war/spying/rogue operatives, but I liked it. :D

I am also reading Too Fat to Fish. I went to the booksiging in West Hollywood on Friday. Got a book, signed, and shook hands with the apple of Grandma Caprio’s eye. It is a GREAT book. I laugh my @$$ off all the time, and am almost done.

One of my all-time favorite books. I didn't find Hurston until grad school. I have everything she wrote. She influenced Alice Walker. Does your book have the inscription by Walker, "There is no more important book in the world to me than this one."?

She was so moved by TEWWG that she went to Florida (I think that's where she's buried), found Hurston's grave and purchased a marker.

Dust Track on a Road is also good. Anything Hurston wrote was wonderful. Enjoy.

Yes, yes and YES!
It is a re-read for me. Timely. To think it was an underground phenomen as late as the 70s! Hurston would have loved what happened in your country two weeks ago.

Honestly, she was one of the first people who came to mind once Ohio went for Obama ... I suppose a lot of my generation was thinking about MLK, and he was on my list, but Hurston was at the top.

Do you know much about her? She really was ahead of her time ... both racially and socially as a woman, traveling through the South on her own, collecting stories ...

I taught a course at the local university and put her on my syllabus, so yes. You could say I know some about her.
