2008 - A Good Year For Music!?!?

Post by FunkHouse9 »

I have to say, from my perspective, 2008 has been a very good year for rock music, perhaps more than any other year this century. I finally feel like I have some reasons to put my iPod down and turn on the radio.

-Metallica released an album that kicks some serious butt and are touring.
-AC/DC released a pretty awesome album and are touring again.
-Axl Rose released Chinese Democracy.
-Stone Temple Pilots is back together and toured.
-Rage Against The Machine is back together and touring.
-R.E.M. released an awesome album and toured.

I know some people will disagree with this very short list, but these are some big things to me.

What other highlights from 2008 do you all think make this year great?

A few more that I like that came out this year...Kenny Chesney's Lucky Old Sun, Brian Wilson's Lucky Old Sun, Stephen Marley's Mind Control and Tom Petty's latest band Mudcrutch's debut CD.

Thanks for calling Chinese Democracy Axl Rose's...without Slash, Izy and Duff it isn't GnR

How does this album compare to the last couple? Whatever song they played on the radio would start out great but went on too long and I just got sick of it.

Maybe I'm stuck in the pre-"Black album" era but for me, everything after the "Black album" has been okay (with some of it just not good). What's everyone's take? Maybe I'm being too hard on the boys...

I'm going to make a very daring statement. I think it's their best album. It has all of the power of Master of Puppets with the speed of Kill 'Em All, the awesomeness of the Black Album. I give a lot of credit to Rick Rubin for this. Once I heard he was on board, my expectations went through the roof and he delivered. I may be way off, but I give it album of the year. I'm a big Metallica fan and it's great.

Everyone I know that has heard it has at least said it's pretty good. There are only 2 tracks I'm not crazy about (#'s 7 & 9). Check out "Broken, Beat & Scarred" and "All Nightmare Long." To me, they are hands down the best tracks on the album followed by "That Was Just Your LIfe."

It's pretty close to one of their best. It's a perfect transition from Justice to the Black album... I like the album alot, and look forward to seeing them live in January.
Mudcrutch album is great!!! It's his band prior to the Heartbreakers, but they never released anything. Now, they got back together and released an album of material. Tom actually plays bass like he did in the "original" Mudcrutch.
REM's album is great as well, and I saw for the first time on this tour, and it was the best show of the year...

A few more... Buckcherry, and Lindsey Buckingham...

Some stuff I like in 08.
Puddle of Mudd, Hinder, Theory of a Dead Man, Five Finger Death Punch, Pepper, Three Day's Grace.
LL Cool J's "Exit 13" is nice too.
The album that's probably got the most play this year from me is Rehab's "Graffiti The World".
I've been living their song "Lawn Chair High" for months now.

I may have to wait until Christmas when this appears in my stocking...

Watched a special on VH1 Classics the other day, about the formation of Mudcrutch, and I thought the stuff they were playing was better than most anything from Highway Companion.

I don't think Mudcrutch is going succeed TP and the HB's tho!

And, the Mudcrutch Extended Play Live EP was released Nov 11th... Guess I can wait a month!

AC/DC was the only one I cared about, all the rest is crap.

That's not a shot at anyone's musical tastes, it's just mine personally. My interest get more narrow with each passing year, and don't listen to anything much that's new, outside of trop rock or red dirt. Unless it's someone I'm really a fan of.

A couple of weeks back I went to my first rock show ever with Hinder, Shinedown, Puddle of Mudd, Rehab, Red Jumpsuit Apparatus and more.
After 10 years of being a Parrothead I think I've about burned out on trop rock. It seems like every Buffett song I put on I just heard.
I probably just need a show to cure that

Mudcrutch isn't exactly Petty's "latest" band, it was a band he formed before the Heartbreakers, he just so happened to resurrect Mudcrutch this year.
