60 below in Alaska

Post by RinglingRingling »

http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/weathe ... 7963.story

quote of the day:

"Johnson, whose home has no heater or running water, said he ventures outside only to get more logs for burning and to fetch water from a community facility. He's been saving the wood to build a cabin as a second home, but that will have to wait a few years now because the heat takes precedence."

why this wasn't part of the article...
so.. let's get this straight.. you live in a shack. and the need to stay warm is going to prevent you from building another shack...

brilliant.

Brrrr no thank you!

I'll have to call my brother who lives in Anchorage. He likes the cold! :o
In Anchorage, Alaska's largest city, residents are used to lows of about 10-degree temperatures in January -- not 19 below zero, which is what folks awoke to yesterday morning.

Temperatures finally settled to about 10 below at midday, but that was cold enough to cancel races in the U.S. Cross Country Ski Championships.

  Now that's cold! Before Christmas, we had a cold spell where the low hit -37 one night. Wind chills were almost -50.
It is times like that where I question my decision to live in Northern Minnesota.

I've been saying that since Dec 17th as I drove to work in a freaking blizzard. The snow from that storm only melted away completely a few days ago.
Well...(said in my best Bubba voice) I've been on sabbatical.

As someone who studied Meteorology and Climatology in college, I would just like to point out that the phrase "Global Warming" is taken wrong way too often.

The key word is not "Warming".
The key word is "GLOBAL".

It is popular, when it is cold outside, to bash the idea of Global Warming. That's small term thinking. It is self-centered and short-sighted.

On the whole, the average temperature worldwide is indeed rising...but a better phrase (and the one that is now being used by Stephen Schneider, the man who originally wrote the book called "Global Warming") is "Global Climate Change". This phrase better represents what is happening, without the need for skepticism.

OK...y'all can back to making fun of the dude in the shack...who is burning the bigger shack.

You know it's cold when you have to adjust your rear view mirror because your truck seat is so hard you don't sink down as far as you normally do.

What's wrong with people these days?

When I was a kid, we had to battle snow storms, deep freeze temperatures and cougars on our way to school each day, which was an uphill ten mile walk - BOTH WAYS!

It made us tough and built character. I could live off the land in mid winter with nothing but some snare wire and a knife if I had to. Don't talk to me about cold.

Sorry, I think I was channeling my father there for a minute (a tough old bugger who really DID have a tough life).

-37 in Grand Forks, ND, -35 in Roseau, and -36 in Hallock. No report yet from IF, tho there is little chance the weather station there froze. :D

Funny thing, the record in GF was -31 in 1979; the winter I tell folks about here where 30+ days straight the daytime high was below zero. It gives folks in central OH a good perspective on a couple days in the single digits.

I was making fun of the guy burning the materials for a second shack, while living in a shack. not sure if the second one is more of a cottage for the weekends, or if he was upgrading... :D
