Well I didn't see a thread donated to this so I thought I'd change that.
I have to say after going through all them once, I'm a little disappointed. I thought it may sound a bit like the Far Side of the World album based on what I heard about the inspiration for the album. However after going through the samples it sound too much like Little Feat for my taste. I know Jimmy loves Little Feat and all, but this album is reeking of big band honky tonk. I didn't really detect a hint of the southern trop-rock troubadour we loved from the early albums or the tropical steel drum flavor we loved in the nineties. I think the later of half of the album is the most promising.

It's hard to discuss an album I have not heard yet.
Where did you hear samples?
A link perhaps?

Okay I have a question. Here's the description on mailboat:
I am wondering how something can be a new song if it's a cover? I guess because it's new to Buffett?"Buffet Hotel" contains 12 great new songs, and also includes a 24-page booklet printed on recycled paper. The CD was influenced by a trip to the West African “Festival In The Desert,” a music event that takes place annually near Timbuktu. It was in Bamako that Jimmy discovered Buffet Hotel, an old colonial era train station/hotel, which was where the music scene flourished in Mali in the 60’s. This collection includes a few songs that Jimmy premiered during the 2009 summer tour, including "Summerzcool" and "A Lot To Drink About." Guest artists on the album include Sonny Landreth, Jake Shimabukuro, Cedric Burnside, Steve "Lightnin'" Malcolm and Toumani Diabate, and was produced by long-time Coral Reefers Mike Utley and Mac McAnally.

I really like what I've heard so far. Tropical and upbeat. The ones that jump right out at me are:
Turn Up The Heat and Chill The Rose
Big Top
Beautiful Swimmers
Wings
Rhumba Man
Surfing In a Hurricane
As far as covers go, I look at it like this. When I first got in Jimmy's music I did not care or even know if the songs were written by him or not. Even if not written by Buffett they sound like they were written for Buffett. Heck "most" of the songs he picks I've never even heard of, usually the artist too. It's not worth taking it that seriously. If it sounds good, it sounds good.
As far as "Little Feat" sound goes, I really don't know since all I've heard from them is "Fat Man In The Bath Tub" (thanks to Jim Morris) and the two songs with Jimmy which I like.
I think I hear some harmonica on one song. I wonder if Fingers made an appearance.

Ditto that here. And pretty much as a whole (there are at least 3 I just don't care for at all), I think I'm quite pleased with the new album. I think he does pretty good with Rhumba Man (although, my favorite is Michael McCloud's version). And I really like Beautiful Swimmers, it has that 'little bit of twang' our Texas Boy King George sings about.ph4ever wrote:I like Nobody from Nowhere, Beautiful Swimmers and Rhumba Man right off the bat.

I think I'll buy it because: ....also includes a 24-page booklet printed on recycled paper. (heee heee and songs)
Recycled paper!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
As for the samples. It's like any other album in the last 11 years. 5-7 decent. Not great, not good, but decent enough to buy.

I didn't listen to the samples but I've already heard 7 of the 12 songs. I'm less than impressed. I think my wallet may stay in my pocket when this one comes out.

LOL....now the misspelling is one too many t's. That's Buffet Hotel.
I wish JB would do another album like Far Side of the World....intellectual songs fitting of the intelligent man he is. It just seems like most of his fans, no offense, seem to be content with him doing the "parody of Jimmy Buffett." ....which I don't think is him.
I'll listen to this when it comes out. I am happy to listen to it. He has Jesse Winchester song and a Bruce Cockburn song on it....so it has that going for it!

I must say, after listening to the samples, I'm a little worried....i agree with those who find it a bit more upbeat and honky tonky than i prefer, no offense to Little Feat......i love them, but sure dont want Mr. Buffett to emulate them....
of course, he never can do enough ballads for me.........like beautiful swimmer!!

Of the songs I HAVE heard (the ones he did live during the summer tour), I like "Surfing In A Hurricane", "Summerzcool," and "Rhumba Man", but I wish he'd take "A Lot To Drink About" and shove it where the sun doesn't shine.
