I've been bummed out all day.
The whales Tail that burnt and was recently rebuilt???
I am heading back to Destin next month...How is the rebuilt version??? I have missed the place my last several visits!
The Tail is now open again! The upstairs is much nicer with much more seating and is "built to code" versus the old Tail. The downstairs is exactly the same as before. Same great staff, same great sunsets.
The county is building a new boardwalk from Surfside Resort west almost to the Circle K. When its done, its going to be a much safer place to park plus the dunes will have a chance to heal from all the storms.
When you come to the Tail, ask for Wayne and Cathi and Mr. Utley. We'll buy you a drink.
Is the upstairs still open to the beach w/ picnic tables or have they fancied it up? I loved the old feel of the place. Are you Wayne, Cathy or Mr. Utley? Do you work there or just gve out free drinks?? :pirate:
I want to go back down and lie beside the sea there.
With a tin cup for a chalice
Fill it up with good red wine...or Rose, as Jimmy said!!!

I miss my dorsal FIN!

After a certain time,The locals and any parrot heads that came in were made to wait while immediately seating others that came in. There were even empty tables on the floor and I know of two groups of locals were lead upstairs to sit in the back corner. We were told that Buffett himself said that if he came out and there were a bunch of Parrot Heads there he would not play a note. The servers were great. They were the ones that had to deal with this event hands on. We feel that the management caused most of it. I personally hope Jimmy had nothing to do with it,but if he did he should be ashamed of himself. Had a great time, but us locals will remember this when fall/winter months come around and there is hardly no body down here.

I really hope that's not true. The fans/PHs in large part made him what he is. I *so* hope that's overstated and he didn't really say that.... (although I certainly believe you that that's what you were told).

I was there and it was amazing!!!! Like you said, word got out. I heard the rumor at around 10:00 that morning, so I left work at noon. We got to Margaritaville at 1:30, got the front center table, and just drank beer and ate cheesburgers all afternoon to hold our table. I have a ton of pictures I will post later. I haven't stopped smiling! Ok, maybe I wasn't smiling when I woke up Thursday morning and realized how much beer I drank the night before! It was the most worth it hangover I have ever had! Jimmy even signed one of my old albums!

How could anybody at Margaritaville tell if they were a local or not ? Parrotheads are usually visible, but who did they let IN ? Old people ? Why would Jimmy want to play for them ? Young people with kids ? Again, .....
And why would the Margaritaville people want to enrage the locals....who patronize the place ? I bet the manager was the one who didn't want Parrotheads there. For some reason, I've heard some managers of Margaritavilles don't particularly care for us. I don't know why....we are caring, money-spending, charity-eventing people. If not for us, would they be working in a Margaritaville ? No, there would be none.

The management at M'ville PC hands out "locals VIP" cards. Gets you on their email list, a small F&B discount and a $15 birthday certificate. We go at least once a month on Sundays. Take a drive down Hyw. 30A. Stop at Shorty's or The Red Bar for a Bloody Mary or two, then hit Shades at the Loop for a beer, then its about 10 more minutes to Pier Park. I'd say our average tab at M'ville is $60. We feel that our loyalty was not recognized by management. A short notice email, maybe a few hours in advance, would have sufficed to attract local fans without causing the entire Emerald Coast from showing up and creating a security nightmare. Just a little recognition is all we ask for our loyalty.

As far as knowing the locals...If you have been there alot regardless a "Parrot Head"or not, they know ya. Respectfully, a tourist looks and acts like a tourist. Most of your locals either dresses in Tropical style or has their VIP card with them. M'ville were sitting families with kids on the floor in front of the stage. Remember it is also Spring Break here and they were seated as well while we had to wait. When we heard about Jimmy coming, we automatically through on our Rendezvous/PH club shirts and were told from friends before we entered that we shouldn't have worn them, but didn't know that we would be treated in such a way! All this will be remembered when asked where to go eat by tourists and winter slow down. We didn't expected to be treated special...just fairly.

Just a quick follow up to Jimmy's recent appearance in Panama City. Here is an excerpt from our local news paper, the Walton Sun. Note the last line, regarding being sighted in Destin at Harbor Docks Restaurant after the show. I buy my fish for my restaurant there every week. Missed him again.

"The biggest stir lately, though, was last week when Jimmy Buffett fans were given a treat.

Destin photographer Scott Jackson was invited by a friend to go to Margaritaville at Pier Park for drinks. He was only told it was for something special.

“I figured I would go,” he said.

“I arrived at 3 and the place was on lockdown. If anyone went outside for a smoke, they couldn’t get back in. It was pretty intense,” said Jackson. “The house band began playing and nobody mentioned his name until at 4:30 when somebody on stage said, ‘Well, you really can keep a secret.’ You could hear the buzz of apprehension then as everybody got their camera phones ready. Buffett came out and ambled up on stage and everybody went wild. He played for 45 minutes to an hour.

“A lot of people knew but were sworn to secrecy. Employees were told they were coming in for an alcohol awareness meeting. But everybody knew something was up. There were eight bartenders behind the bar on a Wednesday afternoon.”

Jackson said Buffett played maybe five songs before he left, opening with “Brown Eyed Girl” and closing with “Margaritaville.” He also played his iconic “Cheeseburger in Paradise.”

“There were maybe 400 people there and it was standing room only,” said Jackson, who admits to liking Buffett even though he is “not a Parrot Head.”

Buffett was again sighted later at Harbor Docks in Destin."

I went to this Margaritaville for the first time a few days ago when I was on vacation. Wish he would have been there then! I can't even imagine what it would be like to have him pop into somewhere like that. That's my dream!

My husband plays in a Jimmy Buffett type band and has even played with Buffett before. He knows a lot about him, and he told me a long time ago that Jimmy doesn't like Parrotheads, so I kind of believe that he would have said all of that. It's too bad. My husband used to really like him, but he thinks he has changed. I told him I don't care, I still love going to shows and meeting new people! Parrotheads are the best!
